Position Summary:

The Staff RN on the Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatric Unit provides compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to older adults experiencing acute psychiatric conditions. The RN collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to promote safety, stabilization, and recovery in a structured therapeutic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans.
  • Administer medications and monitor for therapeutic and adverse effects.
  • Provide direct patient care including assistance with ADLs, behavioral interventions, and crisis management.
  • Monitor and document changes in mental and physical health status.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, medications, and discharge planning.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state regulations, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Participate in unit safety rounds, de-escalation techniques, and emergency response protocols.
  • Advocate for patient dignity, autonomy, and rights in all aspects of care.
Qualifications:
  • Required:

    • Current RN license in [State]
    • BLS certification
    • Strong clinical judgment and communication skills
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment
  • Preferred:

    • Experience in psychiatric or geriatric nursing
    • CPI or other crisis intervention certification
    • BSN or higher degree in nursing
Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist patients for extended periods.
  • Capacity to manage stressful situations and respond calmly to psychiatric emergencies.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical interventions when necessary.
Work Environment:
  • Secure inpatient psychiatric unit with a focus on geriatric care.
  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Emphasis on trauma-informed care and patient-centered approaches.
