Routing/ Switching Engineer

The Center for Information Technology has an immediate opening for the full-time position of Senior Web Designer to develop

top tier web pages, interfaces and applications using WordPress, CSS/XHTML, Adobe Photoshop, and other CMS Web and

Design technologies. This role requires excellent communication skills as you will be working with Marketing, Graphic Artists,

Programmers and Backend Server Teams to provide guidance and instruction.

Job Duties:

  • Web Development: Experience and familiarity with front-end languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Web Designing: Developing functional prototypes to demonstrate concepts and to enable rapid iterative support for

evaluation and promotion.

  • Management: Develop support and implement marketing and promotions for Hampton University
  • Collaborations: Communicating with clients, product managers, designers, backend engineers, and graphic artists to

refine the user experience. Enhance Community awareness through electronic media and mobile application

distributions. Working as technical liaison with multiple departments to ensure accurate and favorable

representation online. Establish policies and procedures to optimize planning, promotion and publication of campus

activities and events.

  • Innovation: Connecting with the development community to track latest trends and incorporate emerging

technologies. Evaluation, purchase, and procurement of necessary products and services to support the University

mission. Developing unique and innovative design solutions.

  • Wireframing and Prototyping: Creating wireframes and prototypes to visualize and communicate design concepts

before implementation.

  • Database Management: Managing interaction of databases (e.g., MySQL, PHP, Oracle).
  • Platform Sizing: Implement responsive design principles to ensure websites work well on various devices.
  • Testing/Debugging: Proficient in testing and debugging techniques to ensure the reliability of code.
  • Cross-Browser Compatibility: Ensuring websites work consistently across different web browsers.
  • Version Control/Git: Proficiency in using version control systems like Git for collaboration and code versioning.
  • Security Best Practices: Implementing and enforcing web security best practices to protect against common

vulnerabilities.

  • Translational Activities: Demonstrated ability to use multiple online tools and services to create responsive systems

for rapid updates and changes (DocuSign, SharePoint, JotForm etc...)

  • APIs (Application Programming Interfaces): Ability to integrate third-party APIs and develop custom APIs.
  • Graphic Design: Proficiency in design tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Sketch to create visually appealing

layouts, graphics, and images.

  • UI/UX Design: Understanding of user interface and user experience principles to create intuitive and user-friendly

designs.

  • Color Theory: Understanding of color combinations and their impact on user emotions and perception.
  • Typography: Knowledge of typography principles to choose and pair fonts effectively for readability and aesthetics.
  • Other activities as required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to create and manipulate code utilizing WordPress, HTML5, CSS/CSS3, XML, and JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with and Popular Website CMS management tools (WordPress, Nginx, Drupal, Joomla, etc.)
  • Minimum of one to two years experience in graphic design, and/or designing and developing website and web

marketing content.

  • Desired technical skills and knowledge including web banner design, user-interface design, knowledge of interactive

marketing, creativity, and user-focused.

  • Certification in Web Development or related discipline preferred, 2+ years of web-application development

experience, the ability to offer perspective on features that are important to the customer experience, a proven track

record of launching interactive web sites/applications, demonstrated development skills across a range of

technologies including: CSS, HTML/XHTML/WAP, ActionScript/JavaScript, and XML/XSLT, experience in visual

standard development and interest in interface design.

  • HTML/CSS: Proficiency in HTML for structuring web content and CSS for styling and layout.
  • JavaScript: Strong understanding of JavaScript for creating interactive and dynamic web pages.
  • Problem-solving: Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and debug issues in the development process.
  • Command Line/Shell: Familiarity with Unix command line interfaces for efficient development workflows.
  • Continuous Learning: Given the rapid evolution of web technologies, a willingness to stay up to date and learn new

tools and techniques is crucial.

  • Time Management: Efficiently managing time to meet project deadlines and deliver high-quality designs.
