Summary The Safety Manager is an individual contributor who will be responsible for the development, deployment, training, and enforcement of safety and health policies, practices, and procedures within the construction realm. This role leads accident and injury investigations in the construction sector and supports the preparation of materials for hearings and insurance investigations. The Safety Manager ensures the construction division's compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, as well as internal policies, and conducts regular safety inspections across job sites and facilities. This position requires frequent travel to field locations and job sites, including overnight travel as needed. It also requires frequent travel to one of 2 construction yards/offices. This position does not have direct reports. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leads all safety compliance efforts pertaining to internal, OSHA, DOT, EPA, state and federal highway regulations, and local traffic control and job set‑up (work zone) requirements Conducts inspections and tours of facilities, job sites and work zones to identify existing or potential hazards including safety, fire, work zone, and other health hazards. Recommends corrective or preventative actions, as needed May present on‑site employee training programs in accident prevention, fire prevention, work zone, traffic control, and other safety‑related topics, including formal training sessions and field‑based toolbox talks Develops and leads training sessions during safety meetings and other company‑wide safety initiatives Investigates accidents and injuries and provides management with detailed root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations Prepares legally required reports and supporting documents for hearings, lawsuits, insurance claims, complaint and/or claims defense, and regulatory inquiries Keeps key statistics for the construction division under Safety Manager supervision, to include injuries, accidents, near misses, DART rates, OSHA TIR, MSHA reporting, etc. Prepares and/or completes outside inquiries including safety pre‑qualifications for job bids/estimating Manages/maintains online contractor management software such as Avetta and ISNET Serves as a liaison with local fire departments, hospitals, regulatory agencies, and other outside partners regarding employee safety and health programs as required Maintains strong, positive working relationships with employees based on trust, respect, and fairness Maintains open communication across all levels of the organization and serves as a safety advocate where needed Keeps current on evolving laws, regulations, and industry best practices and updates policies and manuals accordingly Reviews driver Hours of Service Records (driver logs) and vehicle inspection reports and provides feedback to leadership, including annual Driver History reviews to ensure compliance with safety standards is upheld and drivers remain qualified Ensures company database of all Safety Data Sheets is up to date and accurate for the construction division Other duties, projects, and responsibilities may be assigned at the company's discretion Skills and Education Required Bachelor's of Science Degree in Safety, Environmental, Health, Human Resources, or another related field In lieu of a degree, 5+ years of relevant experience in safety leadership and compliance within heavy highway construction (highway, street, and bridge) Experience in safety and health management role or related area Well‑established organizational skills with strong attention to detail, record‑keeping skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially PowerPoint, Excel, and Word Strong public speaking and presentation skills, including the ability to deliver training to groups of up to 60+ employees Preferred Experience in Construction and Manufacturing 2+ years of relevant safety experience combined with a bachelor's degree ATSSA Traffic Control Technician, Supervisor, or Instructor certification Familiarity with the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) Job Requirements Willingness and ability to travel to job sites approximately 50% of working hours Ability to complete overnight travel approximately 25% of the time Ability to work in a team environment with a variety of internal and external stakeholders Ability to work independently with minimal supervision Ability to work closely with customers, vendors, and regulatory agencies on a regular basis Must be able to work overtime as needed Ability to perform work requiring frequent use of wrists, hands, and fingers Ability to perform primarily sedentary work with occasional exertion up to 10 pounds Ability to see, hear, speak, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity Ability to operate standard office equipment including computers, phones, printers, and copiers Ability to troubleshoot and communicate effectively with users in both in‑person and remote settings Benefits Our comprehensive benefits package includes: Competitive pay 401(k) matching & profit sharing Health, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance Short- and Long-Term Disability Plans Additional voluntary benefits Paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave Tuition assistance Work Environment This position is primarily office‑based with frequent travel required on short notice.
