Tekberry is looking for a highly qualified and motivated Safety Engineer to work onsite with our client, a world-class research and academic institution. In this role, you will collaborate with the Health and Safety team and Maintenance & Operations (M&O) staff to design, implement, and oversee safety systems and procedures across diverse facilities. As a W2 employee, you will have access to health benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage.

Responsibilities

Health & Safety Program Development (50%)

  • Work closely with M&O management to identify, evaluate, and mitigate hazardous conditions, unsafe behaviors, and work practices.

  • Recommend and implement containment and corrective actions for hazard control, including design improvements, methods, and procedures.

  • Develop and draft comprehensive safety procedures such as Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry, Machine Guarding, Hazardous Waste Management, and Mechanical Room Safety.

  • Conduct health and safety inspections, exposure/risk assessments, and quantitative/qualitative data analyses.

  • Provide recommendations and guidance for hazard prevention, risk control, and safety performance improvement.

Systems Safety & Quality Assurance (50%)

  • Evaluate system safety requirements and develop a quality control framework for Maintenance and Operations leadership.

  • Collaborate with engineers, facilities teams, and safety staff to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and university safety policies.

  • Promote safety awareness through hands-on collaboration and by modeling best practices in the field.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, training records, and safety program updates.

  • Participate in occasional evening or weekend work for safety audits, training, or emergency response as needed.

Must-Have Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Safety Engineering, or related field (required).

  • 1 5 years of experience in safety engineering, process safety, or systems safety.

  • Strong understanding of hazard analysis, risk assessment, and control methodologies.

  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA, EPA, and state safety standards.

  • Excellent communication, analytical, and documentation skills.

  • Ability to work onsite full-time and collaborate with multiple departments in a fast-paced academic environment.

  • Strong problem-solving and emotional intelligence, especially under time-sensitive or high-pressure conditions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing or implementing safety procedures in facilities or construction environments.

  • Previous work in higher education, utilities, or building operations settings.

  • Certification(s) such as CSP, CHST, or CIH preferred.

  • Familiarity with Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and mechanical/electrical safety programs.

Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates professionalism, collaboration, and effective communication with colleagues and stakeholders.
Quality & Accuracy: Ensures all safety procedures and documentation meet technical and regulatory standards.
Culture of Safety: Promotes a proactive culture of safety, modeling compliance and hazard awareness.
Work Environment: Onsite, with occasional fieldwork in mechanical rooms, construction sites, waste management areas, and both indoor/outdoor facilities.
