Safety OfficerThe Virgin Islands Water & Power Authority is looking for a Safety Officer in St. Croix, VI. This is a full-time position within the Safety department under the Corporate Administrative Services division.The Safety Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe, accident-free, and healthy work environment. This role requires working overtime as conditions demand and on short notice during emergency conditions.Essential duties and responsibilities include:Implementing, coaching, and enforcing safety policies and procedures in compliance with local and federal regulations.Conducting internal audits and improving the Safety Management System.Identifying and acting upon unsafe actions and conditions, and investigating safety issues.Providing technical expertise in job hazard analyses and auditing project activities.Responding to incidents and accidents, and conducting safety investigations.Presenting information to various stakeholders and conducting safety meetings.Conducting field audits and generating performance indicators.Maintaining PPE inventory and enforcing safety policies.Developing relationships with employees, management, and client representatives.Ensuring daily tailgate meetings and organizing safety topics for departmental meetings.Coordinating employee training and identifying areas for improvement.Identifying hazardous measures and providing safety messages during emergency response operations.Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:Utility-specific industrial safety practices and occupational health and safety requirements.Root Cause Analysis methodology, regulatory requirements, and safety culture change management.Training and knowledge in personal protective equipment and hazardous materials management.Knowledge of electronic permitted systems and power plant or transmission distribution specific safety.Knowledge of critical safety systems and decontamination procedures.Education and experience required:Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Safety and Occupational Health Applied Sciences, Safety Engineering, or other related field and 2-5 years of work experience in a plant or utility with demonstrated knowledge of industrial plant safety instrumented systems and engineered safeguards preferred; would consider candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent, and 5-7 years of experience in a safety position within a large plant or utility.
