General Job Summary
The Safety Officer will be responsible for partnering with other Safety personnel to maintain a culture of safety across all Mathews Brothers facilities. This position will take a lead role in establishing safety protocols and implementing safety programs. The Safety Officer will assist in managing workers compensation claims and provide direct first aid as needed. This role is also responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance with OSHA and conducting site safety inspections. The Safety Officer will report to the Director of Human Resources.
Essential Job Functions
- Oversee creation, implementation, and documentation of standard operating procedures as it comes to safety
- Carry out risk assessments and take appropriate action to reduce workplace risks
- Complete regular site safety inspections to ensure that policies and procedures are being properly followed
- Manage workers compensation claims and reporting
- Maintain record keeping and reporting for all safety related incidents including accidents, injuries, near misses, first aid care, workers compensation and OSHA events
- Perform minor first aid on minor employee injuries as needed, make decisions on level of care needed, and transport to appropriate medical care
- Manage and organize the safe disposal of hazardous substances and waste
- Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of OSHA and any safety developments in the Manufacturing industry
- Actively observe and provide feedback on employees work to eliminate at risk behavior or habits and work with managers and HR as needed to ensure corrective actions are taken
- Assist with developing, conducting and documenting job site safety orientations for all new team members, subcontractors, and other appropriate vendors and visitors
- Manage DOT regulatory compliance including processing and maintaining medical certificates and coordinating drug and alcohol testing programs
- Lead monthly safety meetings at each site and ensure appropriate action is taken
- Provide safety training and certifications as needed

Skills/Experience/Training Preferred
- Associate or Bachelors degree in applicable field of study such as Occupational Health and Safety
- 2+ years of experience in workplace safety ideally in a Manufacturing environment
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations , DOT requirements, and workplace safety laws
- Experience with workers compensation and OSHA recordkeeping
- Superior written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work well with a team and collaborate with others
Working Conditions
- Working hours are 9:30am to 6:00pm with variability as needed
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to grasp and lift
- Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
- Regularly required to lift up to 25 pounds; occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
- Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus required
- Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and vibration
- Regularly exposed to high noise level
