Job Summary

This full time position is in a research setting and will support analytic and scientific studies in microbiology, evaluation of experimental results and the application of scientific principles in microbial research and technology development. The Scientist 2 will support various projects: conducting experiments and evaluating data including food production for space exploration missions, wastewater, disinfection, and contamination investigations. In addition to supporting research projects, the Scientist 2 will support maintenance, supply, standard operating procedure documentation, and routine quality control aspects of the microbiology lab. Generally, function in one or more of the following activities: literature review, experiment preparation and design, microbiological analysis, lab functions, data analysis and conference presentation of results.

Responsibilities:

  • Daily overall operations in the microbiology lab. Responsibilities include implementing standard operating procedures, ensuring safe operation of equipment by multiple users, and ensuring all safety guidelines are strictly followed.
  • Conduct microbiology experiments in conjunction with NASA’s Food Safety Initiative including analysis of samples from ISS grown crops and specialized controlled environments.
  • Conduct microbiology experiments in conjunction with the NASA’s exploration systems Mars Campaign office, including water recovery and disinfection.
  • Prepare and present reports and presentations on project status.
  • Manage inventory and ordering for the microbiology department.
  • Manage logistical needs for the laboratory, facility modifications and administrative tasks.
  • Maintain culture collections.
  • Work on other projects as assigned.

Requirements

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology or related science field or equivalent experience

Required Years of Experience:

  • Five (5) years of related experience

Required Skills, Qualifications, Technical Experience, Certifications, etc.:

  • Strong background in microbiology.
  • Experience in bacterial and fungal culture and enumeration methods.
  • Expertise in sterile technique.
  • Experience in microbial identification techniques and practices, both culture based and molecular nucleic acid isolation and sequencing methods.
  • Organizational skills and data management.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and customer interface skills required
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Competent in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SharePoint.
  • Other statistical analysis or bioinformatics experience a plus.
  • Ability to work daily in an environmentally controlled laboratory setting.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
