Position Title:
SCRUM Master

Position Summary
The SCRUM Master will serve as a key contributor to the success of project research initiatives by managing and advancing Agile processes at a project level. This role involves close collaboration with the project’s Principal Investigator (PI), oversight of Agile development teams' work being performed, ensuring Software Quality Assurance (SQA) is performed, and ensuring technical solutions are being provided on time and within budget. The ideal candidate will bring Agile methodology expertise, sound judgment, and a proactive approach to supporting Agile project environments.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Maintain and advance technical operational duties across research projects, ensuring alignment with evolving scientific needs.
  • Collaborate with the project PI to manage and fulfill data requirements for research teams.
  • Manage the Agile release cycles and ensure releases stay on time, in scope, and on budget.
  • Provide technical recommendations to improve team velocity and sprint outcomes.
  • Oversee full-cycle resource management, including intake and fulfillment of Agile requests.
  • Analyze incoming project requests using expert judgment and advise the PI on prioritization and feasibility to ensure they meet project needs.
  • Prepare and present reports on application uptime, project financials, task status, and other key performance indicators.
  • Direct project Agile processes and staff to ensure work priorities are met and shift priorities as required.
  • Attend project meetings and interpret Agile user stories and backlog items to staff and stakeholders.
  • Document and maintain Agile workflows, sprint planning, and retrospectives, and recommend improvements to enhance efficiency.
  • Uphold ORNL’s core values—Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service—while fostering a respectful, inclusive, and accessible workplace.
  • Other duties as assigned that pertain to customer DevOps Task needs.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Agile Project Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Agile development teams and Operations Management.
  • Proven ability to gather and interpret Agile backlog and sprint planning for complex research projects.
  • Ability to direct Agile technical work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with staff, sponsors, and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills that support collaboration, leadership, and team building.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in IT project management, particularly in research or technical environments.
  • Background in supporting research computing or scientific infrastructure.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently while contributing to collaborative teams.
  • Experience designing, operating, and managing Agile tools and frameworks (e.g., Jira, Confluence).
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to evolving project needs.
Additional Requirements
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Security Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance. As such, it is designated as a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing position, requiring a pre-placement drug test and participation in ongoing random drug testing.
