EPRD Lifeguard Job Description Summer 2024

Position Title: Lifeguard

Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring the facilities and activities at the Daniel R. Healy Outdoor Pool. Lifeguards will communicate and enforce rules/ regulations in a personable and professional manner. Working under the direct supervision of the Manager on duty, Lifeguards will ensure the safety of patrons in and around the aquatic facilities and follow their training when responding to any incidents. Lifeguards are also instructors during swim lessons and/or other aquatic programming. All jobs are considered seasonal and one-year positions. Once you are assigned a spot on the schedule it is your job to work that spot or get someone to work for you. Not coming to work is grounds for dismissal.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform rescue and emergency care when needed.
  • Knowledgeable of the rules and regulations for the pool.
  • Open the pool each day and close it down each evening, depending on schedule and hours.
  • Responds to basic public inquiries and directs concerns to the appropriate authority.
  • Participate in ongoing in-service trainings run by the Parks & Recreation department.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to safety and risk management by enforcing rules, scanning for distressed swimmers, observe, document and report safety concerns.
  • Completes reports and forms associated with patron care and facility statistics.
  • Operate and maintain all safety equipment and supplies.
  • Attend training sessions; maintain all required certifications, maintain physical fitness.
  • Perform general maintenance and janitorial duties in order to maintain an orderly, friendly, clean and safe environment for guests, co-workers and the general public.
  • Maintain professional appearance while on duty.
  • Demonstrates and supports EPRD customer service standards.
  • Upholds and enforces all EPRD aquatic policies and procedures.
  • Lead or assist in aquatic programming and swim lessons
  • Perform related duties as required.

Time Commitment:

25-40 hours per week, from June until August 20. Varied working hours, Monday-Sunday

Pay: $16.00 $20.00 hourly, depending on qualifications.

Qualifications:

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification. If you are not certified or your certification has expired, we will get you certified.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and make appropriate decisions in emergency situations.
  • Good cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both one on one and group settings.
  • Must be able to work entire season and attend in-service trainings (June through August 18).
  • Desired: Experience lifeguarding at a pool, beach, or waterpark.
  • Must maintain physical skills as required by Lifeguard Certification.
  • Ability to frequently walk, run, stand, or stoop.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Speech, hearing, literacy, and vision.
