JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Public Works Transportation department's Bridge, Road, and Sign divisions are seeking multiple candidates to work as Seasonal Laborers for the 2024 road construction season.

Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a$500referral bonus. For more information visitemployee referral program.

Location and hours:
These positions are located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340. The typical work schedule will be 6 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday, with occasional evening and weekend hours. There is no public transportation to this facility.


About these position types:
These are temporary, seasonal positions (non-benefit earning) that may last for up to six months during the 2024 road construction season (April - October). These positions are also available to accommodate a student's schedule and work from (June - August).


These positions are internally classified as Casual Laborer. Click here to view the job classification specification.

In these positions, you will:

Seasonal Laborer- Traffic Operations
  • Have work responsibilities that include:
    • Flagging traffic.
    • Shoveling, raking, and sweeping.
    • Installing and maintaining pavement markings.
    • Driving a follow truck/coning truck during long line striping.
    • Tree trimming, bush chipping, and debris removal.
    • Installing signs and traffic control devices.
  • Operate and program electronic message boards; deliver and set up message boards around the county.
  • Perform other road construction/traffic maintenance related laborer tasks.
  • Install and maintain traffic control signs and devices during bridge inspection and bridge maintenance work.
Seasonal Laborer Bridge Division
  • Have work responsibilities that include:
    • Flagging traffic.
    • Shoveling, raking, and sweeping.
    • Crack sealing bridge decks.
    • Tree trimming, bush chipping, and debris removal.
    • Installing signs and traffic control devices.
  • Assist bridge maintenance crews with bridge flushing and bridge sealing activities.
  • Paint over/remove graffiti.
  • Perform other road construction/traffic maintenance related laborer tasks.
  • Assist with traffic control signs and devices during bridge inspection and bridge maintenance work.
Seasonal Laborer - Road Operations:
  • Have work responsibilities that include:
    • Flagging traffic.
    • Shoveling, raking, and sweeping.
    • Cleaning ditches and landscape.
    • Patching potholes and sealing cracks.
    • Tree trimming, bush chipping, and debris removal.
    • Installing signs and traffic control devices.

Must be 18 years or older and need to have:
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Availability and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 70 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, and work on uneven terrain.
  • Follow verbal and written directions, including the department's cellphone policy.

Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Working with traffic control and/or traffic control devices.
    • Flagging on a road construction project.
    • Working with concrete
  • Knowledge of road and grounds maintenance practices and equipment.
  • Ability to hook, pull, and back up a trailer efficiently.
  • Ability to operate a 1-ton dump box truck and knowledge of how to back up a trailer. Be able to set up a lane closer in accordance with the MUTCD.
