A leading academic institution in northern New York State is seeking an experienced Capital Construction Manager to oversee a major multi-million-dollar science and engineering expansion and renovation project on campus.

This position is a contracted project management role responsible for overseeing the full lifecycle of a large-scale capital construction project-from planning and design through execution and close-out. The Construction Manager will serve as the primary liaison between university leadership, architects, engineers, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure the project is delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with all standards and regulations.

The project site is located in Potsdam, NY (approximately one hour south of Ottawa, Ontario). Candidates must be open to onsite work throughout the project term.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the design, development, and construction of a large-scale educational facility expansion and renovation project.

  • Oversee project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management in alignment with institutional and regulatory requirements.

  • Serve as the main point of coordination among architects, engineers, construction firms, and university stakeholders.

  • Ensure all activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as university and sustainability standards.

  • Review and approve design submittals, safety documentation, permits, and inspection reports.

  • Track and control project costs, ensuring alignment with approved budgets and timely reporting.

  • Manage contracts, procurement, and contractor performance to maintain quality and schedule adherence.

  • Prepare and deliver regular progress updates to leadership on milestones, financials, and performance.

  • Incorporate energy-efficient and sustainable design practices to achieve environmental certification goals (LEED or equivalent).

  • Optionally contribute to mentorship or educational programs related to construction management, depending on expertise and availability.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
  • Associate degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field - or equivalent trade certification/licensure.

  • 10+ years of experience managing large-scale design and construction projects, ideally in education, science, or public infrastructure sectors.

  • Proficiency in project management tools such as Primavera P6, MS Project, AutoCAD, or BIM platforms.

  • Deep understanding of budgeting, scheduling, procurement, and contract administration.

  • Familiarity with New York State building codes, ADA standards, and environmental/sustainability guidelines.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field.

  • Professional certifications: PMP, CCM, FMP, CHFM, or equivalent.

  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA).

  • Proven experience managing multi-phase capital projects within higher education or institutional settings.

  • Working knowledge of New York State bidding and procurement processes.

Compensation & Terms
  • Annual compensation between $120,000 and $155,000, commensurate with experience.

  • Initial 2 3 year contract, renewable monthly as project phases progress.

  • Limited university-level benefits may apply depending on appointment structure.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a seasoned construction professional who thrives in complex, multi-stakeholder environments and has a passion for delivering sustainable, high-quality educational infrastructure. This role requires both technical expertise and exceptional organizational skills to coordinate across disciplines and maintain transparency throughout all phases of the project.
