POSITION DESCRIPTION

Natividad is currently accepting applications for Senior Central Sterile Technician and Senior Certified Sterile Processing Technician positions in the Central Sterile Department. This incumbent is responsible for equipment sterilization and the proper care and storage of equipment used for patient care.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Senior Central Sterile Technician:
This is the lead worker level class in the Central Sterile Unit at Natividad Medical Center. This position performs the duties of a lead worker, which encompass overseeing the work of other subordinate staff members. The Senior Central Sterile Technician reports to and receives direction from the Director of Surgical Services.

Senior Certified Sterile Processing Technician: This classification is distinguished from the lower level classification of Senior Central Sterile Technician in that the latter does not require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA).

Examples of Duties

SIGNIFICANT DUTIES

  • Develops, monitors, and evaluates individual staff development plans; conducts unit-specific orientation; and performs the initial and continuous training of Central Sterile Technicians, including one-on-one sessions and department in-services.
  • Organizes and coordinates the activities/work in the Central Sterile Unit; assists in supervising subordinate staff by assigning, coordinating and reviewing work; prepares scheduling assignments which ensure adequate coverage.
  • Performs the full scope of duties of a Central Sterile Technician, whenever requested and/or necessary.
  • Monitors, directs, and evaluates the maintenance and quality assurance process for equipment in the Central Sterile Unit; maintains and modifies a record keeping system for all departmental equipment.
  • Acts as a resource person on matters concerning industry standards, policies, procedures, equipment and practices in the assigned specialized area.
  • Participates on hospital committees/teams; collects quality review data and other departmental statistics; assembles, analyzes and utilizes the data to prepare written reports.
  • Participates in the selection and performance evaluation process for Central Sterile Technicians.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Through knowledge of:

  • Asepsis technique and infection control procedures
  • Various medical supplies, instruments and equipment used in a large medical facility
  • Gowning, scrubbing, and gloving procedures
  • Universal precautions for handling blood and body fluids


Working knowledge of:

  • Basic care within the scope of practice for a Central Sterile Technician or Certified Sterile Processing Technician
  • Procedures and medical terminology for Central Sterile Unit
  • Storeroom, stock control, and inventory practices and procedures
  • Methods, procedures and techniques in the decontamination, storage, preparation and sterilization of medical supplies, instruments and equipment
  • Guidelines and legalities governing the scope of practice for Central Sterile Technicians
  • Safety practice including proper body mechanics

Some knowledge of:
  • The personnel principles and practices necessary to lead a work unit, including planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning, directing and evaluation
  • The leadership principles, practices, and techniques necessary to lead work unit, including motivation, conflict resolution and communication

Skill and ability to:

  • Assist physicians, nurses and nursing staff with procedures in Central Sterile Unit
  • Work cooperatively, effectively and calmly in emergency medical situations
  • Anticipate the instruments and supply needs of physicians before and during procedures
  • Assist in accounting for all medical supplies, instruments and equipment used during a procedure
  • Organize and maintain clinical and procedural records and charts
  • Transcribe and enter orders accurately
  • Transfer patients safely
  • Observe and record observations of patients
  • Perform vital signs accurately
  • Plan and conduct department in-services; teach and train the theories, principles, practices and techniques used in the Central Sterile Unit.
  • Communicate clearly and proficiently both orally and in writing at a level necessary to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position
  • Work cooperatively with physicians, nurses, patients and staff; establish and maintain effective working relationships


Experience: Both Classifications:
Three (3) years of experience assisting physicians or medical personnel in the Central Sterile Unit of an acute care hospital.

License/Certification:

Senior Central Sterile Technician:
  • Possession of a valid CPR certificate is required

Senior Certified Sterile Processing Technician:

  • Possession of a valid CPR certification is required

  • A Sterile Processing Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) is required.

  • Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
  • Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
  • Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven and clean driving record.
  • Employees must have and show their original Social Security Card and a valid CA Driver License or CA State ID prior to the first day of work.
  • Incumbents may be required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays;
