Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take on a leadership role on our Engineering team in Boston, MA. This position is ideal for a seasoned engineer with extensive experience in designing highly integrated, high-tech handheld instrumentation. In addition to your mechanical design expertise, you will also function as an industrial designer, ensuring that our products not only perform exceptionally but also deliver a superior user experience. A strong background in SolidWorks, electromechanical systems, industrial design, and PCB layout integration is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the mechanical design of highly integrated and advanced handheld instrumentation, ensuring seamless integration of electronic, mechanical, and software components.
  • Function as an industrial designer, driving the aesthetic, ergonomic, and user-experience aspects of product development to ensure our products are both functional and visually appealing.
  • Utilize SolidWorks to create and optimize detailed 3D models, assemblies, and drawings for complex systems.
  • Spearhead the design and development of electromechanical systems, with a focus on compact, portable, and high-tech solutions.
  • Oversee the integration of PCB layouts within mechanical designs, ensuring optimal performance, thermal management, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, manufacturing specialists, to drive product innovation from concept to final production.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to inform and refine design decisions, ensuring that the final product meets the needs of the end user.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including specifications, BOMs, and technical histories, within a structured database management system.
  • Champion agile methodologies in the design process, contributing to iterative prototyping and continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, technical excellence, and teamwork.
  • Independently drive projects with minimal technical guidance, demonstrating leadership in both the technical and project management aspects of design.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with a focus on highly integrated, high-tech handheld instrumentation or similar products.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks, with a portfolio showcasing complex mechanical and industrial design work, particularly in electromechanical systems.
  • Extensive experience with PCB layout integration in mechanical designs.
  • Strong background in industrial design, with proven ability to balance form, function, and user experience in product design.
  • Proficiency in database management systems for managing complex design documentation.
  • Deep understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, DFM principles, and industrial design.
  • Proven ability to lead projects independently with minimal technical guidance.
  • Experience working within an agile development environment.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail and a passion for innovation.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to mentor and inspire junior team members.
  • Must be available to work on-site in Boston, MA.
