Location and Employment Primary Location: Grand Rapids, MI or Livonia, MI Employee Status: Full-Time Workplace Type: Hybrid About this Position The Senior Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for analyzing and verifying complex loan applications, evaluating risks, and making loan eligibility decisions. The role requires sound judgment based on detailed analysis and ensures that all documentation complies with applicable regulations for complex loans. Responsibilities Underwrites more complex mortgage loan applications, reviewing credit, collateral, income, and assets (including self‑employment income). Approves, counteroffers, or declines residential loan applications within delegated lending authority, ensuring files are fully underwritten to applicable guideline standards, including secondary market requirements. Analyzes and reviews appraisal reports, requesting clarifications or corrections from vendors. Collaborates with Loan Processors and Sales to address questions on loan structure and guideline adherence. Maintains a working pipeline while meeting productivity levels and credit quality standards. Updates information on loan origination systems to verify, add, and satisfy conditions. Stays current with industry and organizational trends, including underwriting guidelines, mortgage products, and PMI updates, and serves as a subject‑matter expert in relevant areas. Complies with applicable laws and regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. Consistently demonstrates commitment to Lake Michigan Credit Union’s culture, embodying the core values of Curious Minds, Collaborative Hearts, and Continuous Excellence. Qualifications 5+ years of similar or related experience, including preparatory experience; 3+ years of mortgage underwriting experience required. High school diploma required; higher education strongly preferred. Understanding of current mortgage loan interest rates, rate lock/relock fee procedures, and consumer loan products (including Execulines, second mortgage products, swing loans, and land loans). Proficiency with CollateralUnderwriter applications and loan origination software systems; experience with Empower/BlackKnight, LoanBeam, and DataVerify preferred.
