Job Title: Senior Network Engineer
Location: Remote US (EST hours required)
Employment Type: Contract (2 3 months to start)
Pay Range: $70/hr $80/hr
Role Overview:
We are seeking 2 3 Senior Network Engineers to join an existing team and support a network modernization initiative across a multi-site environment. This is a hands-on engagement focused on assessing, standardizing, and modernizing an existing network infrastructure - including routing architecture, access security, and firewall policy - across a primary data center, secondary/colocation site, and several distributed locations. Engineers must be comfortable working in complex, production environments with a strong emphasis on change control discipline and minimal disruption to critical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct a comprehensive current-state assessment of the end-to-end network architecture, including core/distribution/access layers, WAN edge, Internet edge, and firewalls; produce diagrams and documentation establishing a validated baseline
- Review, rationalize, and clean up legacy routing configurations (EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, static routes, default route behavior) and develop standardized config templates for consistent deployment across all sites
- Support implementation and change windows as routing and configuration standards are rolled out across the environment
- Design a wired and wireless 802.1X/NAC solution across the Cisco access layer, integrated with existing NAC and identity infrastructure, with a phased rollout plan including pilot, expansion, and rollback strategies
- Lead switch and WLAN configuration and cutover planning with a strong focus on protecting critical operations throughout the process
- Review Palo Alto firewall configurations at primary and DR/colocation sites, including rulebases, zones, objects, routing, and VPNs; identify and remediate redundant or unused rules and align security controls across both sites
- Ensure critical applications and VPN connectivity function correctly in both normal and DR failover scenarios
- Lead design discussions, own complex change windows, and clearly communicate options and tradeoffs to the internal team
Required Qualifications:
- CCNP, CCIE, or equivalent hands-on experience in enterprise networking
- Strong expertise in Cisco routing and switching, including Nexus, Catalyst, and Meraki platforms
- Deep hands-on experience with Palo Alto firewalls, including complex rulebases, zone-based policy, VPN configurations, GlobalProtect, and EDLs
- Proven experience designing and implementing 802.1X/NAC solutions (Forescout or equivalent) in real-world, multi-site environments
- Experience with routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP in production environments
- Ability to work US Eastern business hours and be available for planned evening and weekend change windows
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in healthcare or clinical network environments with sensitivity to uptime and operational impact
- Familiarity with colocation and DR network design and failover validation
- Strong documentation skills, including network diagrams and standardized configuration templates
