Senior Overhead Transmission Line Structural Engineer Date: Apr 19, 2026 Location: Overland Park, KS; Dallas, TX; Ann Arbor, MI; Orlando, FL; Houston, TX; Tualatin, OR; Cary, NC; Phoenix, AZ; Austin, TX Company: Black & Veatch Family of Companies Opportunity As a Senior Structural – Transmission Line Engineer you will have the opportunity to: Support design engineering and analysis on transmission scopes. Support large, extensive 345kV+ rebuild and greenfield projects, including trending technologies like HVDC and 765kV. Collect and assimilate data for engineering work. Perform research and prepare calculations in accordance with Black & Veight and industry standards. Develop recommendations for equipment and materials. Understand and work successfully within budget, project schedule, and quality requirements. May assist with providing guidance to engineering team members. Maintain positive client relations understanding client interests and drivers through effective communication with the project team. May assist with business development activities. Function as a technical specialist or in a lead role. With minimal supervision, apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods. Expand knowledge and skill set in area of discipline. Key Responsibilities Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies; may own, maintain, update, or develop engineering standards and guides. Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects or disciplines. Apply knowledge and ensure compliance with B&V quality program; establish related processes, promote a culture conducive to quality; support continuous improvement, change management and risk management efforts. Prepare complex engineering deliverables for multiple or mega projects; perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection; oversee collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work. Prepare complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles; manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements; develop and apply advanced engineering solutions to complex problems; ensure project teams delegate appropriate tasks to lower level team members to develop depth of project execution staff; review lower level engineering work or assignments; lead production teams, coordinate multiple discipline activity, and serve as responsible charge for projects; establish work plans for projects. Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on complex projects; define project schedules for single discipline or multiple disciplines. Identify key client interests and drivers on projects; communicate them to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in project work. Identify future client needs and position B&V for the future; offer other services to the client; support business development or pursuit activities. Serve as technical specialist in a broad or narrow area of specialization; develop and apply advanced engineering concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems; support multiple projects on very complex technical challenges; act as an industry expert, present papers, lead large or complex specialty areas, and consult on larger scale projects; support chief engineers or top engineering management; be accountable for discipline‑specific engineering processes. Oversee performance management, career planning, recognition, learning and development, and corrective actions; participate in compensation management, succession planning, disciplinary actions, employee relations and workforce planning; mentor lower‑level and mid‑level professionals; identify successors to train in role specifics. Preferred Qualifications Strong experience in 69kV to 500kV overhead transmission line design and working knowledge of Power Line system based programs (PLS, PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, etc.) Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred. Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to assigned discipline. Previous client interaction experience with solid relationship‑building abilities in pursuit of business opportunities. Experience with the design of utility‑scale electrical transmission systems. Structural design of transmission steel structures and their foundations. Basic structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program, either in the applicant's home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 11 years related work experience. Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search, etc.) in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Work Environment/Physical Demands: Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
