Position Summary
The Controls Engineer reports to the Vice President of Engineering and plays a key role in designing, programming, and commissioning industrial automation systems that ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This hands-on role will support the build, installation, and startup of manufacturing equipment while continuously optimizing performance and reliability. The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills in PLCs, HMIs, and industrial networking with a proactive, safety-first mindset and the ability to work effectively across engineering, operations, and maintenance teams.
Key Responsibilities
Design, program, and commission industrial control systems including PLCs, HMIs, safety systems, and associated hardware.
Collaborate cross-functionally to define controls requirements and integrate equipment into plant-wide systems.
Develop and maintain system documentation including electrical schematics, network architecture, and code standards.
Support design reviews, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
Troubleshoot controls issues, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to ensure uptime and performance.
Conduct machine safety risk assessments and ensure compliance with guarding and safety PLC configurations.
Manage system configuration, software backups, and version control.
Optimize control logic and recommend performance improvements and hardware upgrades.
Ensure all systems comply with NFPA, UL, ISO, and OSHA standards.
Partner with maintenance teams to develop preventative maintenance and support controls troubleshooting.
Maintain strong proficiency in Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and FactoryTalk platforms.
Provide regular project updates and progress reports to the VP of Engineering.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Controls, or Mechatronics Engineering (or related field).
Proven experience designing and supporting industrial control systems.
Strong expertise with Allen-Bradley PLC/HMI systems (ControlLogix, FactoryTalk).
Hands-on experience with sensors, drives, motion control, robotics, and vision systems.
Knowledge of control panel design, industrial networking, and electrical standards.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
Strong communication and project management skills.
Willingness to perform hands-on tasks including wiring, configuration, and commissioning.
Experience with SCADA, MES, and CMMS platforms.
Familiarity with Ignition, SAP, Power BI, and IIoT connectivity.
Experience designing and validating functional safety (SIL/PL).
Understanding of cybersecurity within industrial control systems.
Experience supporting robotics (Fanuc preferred), motion control, and vision integration.
