Primary Responsibilities:
Explain, assist, and guide special education students with class assignments.
Carry out and monitor the behavior of special education students in various settings by observing and keeping records, advising students and directing appropriate behavior.
Assist the special education teacher(s) and specialists with modifying materials regarding the instruction of IEP students.
Collaborates with special education and regular education teachers with classroom activities including academic, social, and executive functioning tasks.
Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, staff, and program operation.
Assist with the supervision of mealtime.
Attend staff meetings, IEP meetings, staff development, and other district activities as directed.
Perform other duties as appropriate to working with students with disabilities.
Qualifications
Obtained an associates degree OR completed two years of study (60 semester credits) at an institution of higher education OR demonstrate competency through a formal state exam (Parapro)
General knowledge of child development.
Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, support staff and parents.
Professional Accountabilities
Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
Participates in various school events, staff meetings and extracurricular activities.
Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
Serve as a role model for promoting effective instruction and professionalism
Working Environment
Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; school building is a multi-level building that has an elevator and is accessible
Position requires extensive interaction with children of all ages
Duties may occasionally be performed on field trips away from school
Duties may occasionally be performed in outdoor environments, such as athletic fields or playgrounds
Duties may occasionally be performed in varying weather conditions, such as hot or cold weather.
Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g. loud classrooms or cafeterias; children speaking or laughing loudly).
