Job Description
The Specialty Camps Unit Head oversees the daily operation and coordination of all specialty camp programs (e.g., arts, sports, science, nature, technology) for campers ages [insert range]. This role ensures that each program runs safely, smoothly, and in alignment with the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
The Unit Head supervises specialty staff, coordinates supplies and logistics, and ensures all specialty programming is engaging, developmentally appropriate, and inclusive.
Key ResponsibilitiesProgram Oversight & Quality Assurance
Support the planning and delivery of multiple specialty camp tracks each week, ensuring consistency in safety, pacing, and camper experience.
Collaborate with instructors to adapt programs based on age group, group dynamics, and camper needs.
Monitor and assess specialty sessions for instructional quality, safety, and alignment with YMCA values and goals.
Provide daily oversight and coaching to specialty counselors, instructors, and volunteers.
Conduct daily check-ins with staff, offer feedback, and support team morale and accountability.
Assist with staff training on camper engagement, inclusion, and risk management.
Ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all campers in specialty areas.
Support positive behavior guidance and help resolve camper conflicts or challenges.
Be a visible presence throughout specialty activities, ready to assist staff or campers as needed.
Maintain inventory and assist with the setup/cleanup of program supplies and spaces.
Serve as the primary liaison between specialty instructors and the broader camp leadership team.
Communicate with parents as needed regarding camper progress, concerns, or special achievements.
Qualifications
Minimum age: 18 years old.
1–2 years of camp, classroom, or youth program experience required.
Supervisory or team leadership experience strongly preferred.
Familiarity with specialty areas such as sports, art, or performing arts is a plus.
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to camp).
Must pass background checks and meet all YMCA child protection standards.
