Pay Range: In accordance with the City of East Chicagos Salary Ordinance passed by the Common Council.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The City of East Chicago is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Sports Coordinator to assist in conducting various youth and adult sports programs; assist in the organization, promotion, and coordination of special events and activities; and perform related duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by the

position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be

assigned.

  • Assists in planning, promoting, implementing, supervising, and coordinating sports programs.
  • Responsible for fulfilling the operational needs of the different centers with a commitment to ensuring the highest level of customer service.
  • Needs sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions and to safely supervise program activities in a variety of indoor and outdoor locations.
  • Manages all team and program practice locations and scheduling.
  • Assists in directing purchasing and coordinates maintenance of all equipment and apparel.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day fiscal affairs of the program, including budget tracking and expenditure monitoring.
  • Proficiently operates computer and software programs in the design, preparation, and distribution of flyers and printed schedules.
  • Provide assistance with Park & Recreation staff to order supplies and maintain inventory.
  • Monitors activities on a flexible schedule primarily during evening, early morning, and weekend hours including weekday hours. Works flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown.
  • Adheres to the citys policies and procedures.
  • Training staff and volunteers, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining.
  • Creates, implements, maintains, and coordinates all active sport recreational opportunities from concept, budget, scheduling, and evaluation and assists the department in implementing, promoting, and recruiting participants for the various sports programs as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Park and Recreation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize transportation to travel to various locations within the specific area.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergencies.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills
  • Knowledge of principles, rules, and procedures in organizing competitive sports.
  • Basic knowledge of sports.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs such as, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and
  • Publisher.
  • Ability to drive.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school graduate or equivalent; preferably some college
  • Two (2) years of related experience required.
  • College Degree focused on recreation, elementary education, physical fitness, or related fields.

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS

  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • CPR & First Aid Certifications or within three months

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the

essential function of this job.

Environment - Work is performed at recreational centers or city parks; working with the general public. The work schedule may require some evening and weekend work.

Physical Primary functions require sufficient ability and mobility to work in a fast-paced recreational setting; to sit, stand, walk, or run; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; requires repetitive hand movement; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Vocal Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas using spoken words and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Vision See in normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in normal audio range with or without correction. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
