Sr. Software Development Engineer, Amazon Leo for Government
Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network that delivers fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks, including government agencies. Amazon Leo for Government (ALG) develops secure, high‑performance satellite communications technologies that support U.S. National and International security and defense.
Key job responsibilities
Design, build, and maintain foundational software that extends Amazon Leo capabilities to U.S. Government customers such as NASA, DoD, and other national security and international government agencies.
Develop brand‑new software services for mission‑critical space safety and sustainability applications that automatically coordinate with external systems and organizations at scale.
Utilize network‑layer packet processing experience and Software‑Defined Networking to create high‑data‑rate packet‑processing systems and enabling interface software for unique government customer needs.
Demonstrate the capabilities of defined interfaces and architectures in simulated test environments that you help develop.
Solve complex technical problems related to the use of the Amazon Leo constellation for government customers as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
Lead internal and vendor teams to develop and deliver on software and interface requirements.
Ensure systems meet Amazon Leo and government customer performance needs, including availability, reliability, upgradeability, interoperability, and security requirements.
Effectively communicate project health, risks, and issues to stakeholders and management teams.
Escalate urgent issues appropriately and drive them to closure in a timely manner.
Provide visualizations, document results, and communicate them across multi‑disciplinary project teams.
About the team
The ALG team is a multi‑disciplinary technology team that develops and delivers targeted and scalable solutions for custom satellite and ground applications, including United States and allied government customers.
Basic Qualifications
5+ years of professional software development experience (non‑internship).
5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language.
5+ years of leading design or architecture of new and existing systems, covering design patterns, reliability, and scalability.
Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leader of an engineering team.
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Go, PowerShell, or Ruby.
Additional Requirements
• This position requires U.S. citizenship.
• The role is based in Sunnyvale (preferred) with U.S. relocation benefits available.
• On‑site work is required five days a week due to the sensitive nature of ALG projects.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range: USD 193,300 – 261,500 annually for Sunnyvale, CA (first listed). Compensation includes sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Benefits include health, dental, vision, prescription, life insurance, EAP, mental health support, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
