SUMMARY

The Stitcher will support the mission of The Atlanta Opera serving the work of the costume shop in the creation of world class opera production on both a grand and intimate scale. The artisan assists in the implementation of costume sketches under the supervision of the Master Draper/Tailor (MDT) and First Hand (FH).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following duties, in addition to other duties as assigned.

  • Sews, either by hand or machine, the costumes assigned by the team leader.
  • Manages time effectively on each sewing project.
  • Maintains organized work area.
  • Communicates with other team members concerning questions, problems, and possible solutions.
  • Contributes to a pleasant and professional atmosphere in the Costume Shop.

COMPETENCIES & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with a wide range of fabrics and materials.
  • Excellent garment construction skills demonstrating experience in a variety of machine sewing techniques as well as hand sewing techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency at operating industrial and domestic sewing machines including but not limited to single needle industrial; industrial zig-zag; overlock; merrow or serger; domestic straight and zig-zag machines; industrial steam irons.
  • Ability to follow directions and ask questions.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time each day.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Punctual, reliable, and responsible.
  • Interest in building and expanding skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Collaboration, flexibility, grace under pressure and a good sense of humor are a must.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • 2-3 years experience in a professional costume shop, or 3-5 years experience at a college level costume shop required.
