SDState is seeking a skilled Systems Engineer specializing in enterprise-class storage and backup administration to join its IT Systems Administration Department. This role is ideal for well-organized, self-motivated team players who want to contribute to the Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) mission of providing technology, skills, and services that empower the university community. This is a full-time, on-site position located in Brookings, South Dakota. SDState is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university with over $94 million annual research expenditures, more than 200 academic programs and an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. Job Responsibilities: As a Systems Engineer, you will be the primary technical expert behind SDState’s enterprise‑class storage and backup environment—critical infrastructure that supports every corner of the university. You’ll lead the design, implementation, and ongoing management of robust storage and backup solutions while ensuring our systems remain secure, scalable, and high‑performing. In this role, you’ll be part of a Systems Administration team that delivers high‑level 2nd and 3rd tier support and contributes to the seamless integration of SDState’s on‑premises and cloud‑based technologies. Your work will directly advance the university’s mission by empowering students, faculty, and researchers with reliable, modern, and innovative IT systems. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of: On-premises storage systems, including both Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Storage Attached Network (SAN) technologies; Cloud storage systems, including NetApp, Azure, and Amazon Web Services (AWS); Cloud file storage solutions (OneDrive, Box); Backup solutions and capabilities; Database and database management technologies, including MSSQL and Oracle; Windows Server Roles and Features, including but not limited to Active Directory, DHCP, RADIUS, and Web Server (IIS); DNS and other networking functionality; VMWare virtualization and server hardware (Cisco UCS, HPE and Dell); Skills & Ability to: Take University requirements and use them to design, implement, and maintain storage systems. This includes both on‑premises and cloud storage; Design and implement a disaster recovery system to meet University needs and requirements; Analyze current setup and evaluate and propose enhancements to ensure optimum data connectivity to University Systems; Demonstrated problem solving ability across an integrated, multi‑server environment; Work independently and research/resolve technical issues and solutions. Desired Qualifications: Minimum of 3 years technical experience; Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field or equivalent experience; Technical certifications in Microsoft or other industry certifications; Experience working in a higher education academic environment. Other Skills: Must be well‑organized, self‑motivated, a team player, able to work unsupervised and possess strong self‑management skills; Must possess excellent verbal and written communications skills; Communicate directly with peers, managers, and clients while leading development to a complete and successful solution; Analyze and maximize technical and operational performance characteristics based upon specified guidelines; Organize, manage, and work on multiple projects and priorities.
