Job Summary:


The Strategic Data Analyst position represents an exciting opportunity to provide business intelligence analytics, consulting, and support to Campus Strategy. The position will focus on integrating data from a variety of systems (PeopleSoft HCM, Tableau, student information systems, Excel files, Salesforce, School/College/unit performance management systems, etc.) to create cross-cutting insights and data visualizations at the campus level. These insights will inform planning, policy decisions, and operational improvements. This position will also respond to recurring and ad hoc requests for information about projects overseen by Campus Strategy.

To be successful in this role, the incumbent will be able to: rapidly develop a deep understanding of the structures and data available in campus systems; build key relationships with campus partners to identify additional strategic data that may be available in School/College systems; and assist those partners in assessing needs, mechanisms, and procedures around effective data collection and management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to requests for information and analysis by organizing, combining, analyzing, and interpreting data. This work may include identifying new or enhanced data sources as needed.
  • Create data visualizations using Tableau. These data visualizations will be used for strategic planning, implementation of initiatives, and discussion with senior campus leaders.
  • Create and maintain Smartsheet datasets and workflows.
  • Present data that includes quantitative and qualitative information about the organizations key mission areas and assist senior leadership in interpreting and using the data to influence changes to operations, processes, and/or programs.
  • Utilize SQL and/or Power BI to integrate multiple and complex data sources to create reports.
  • Aggregate data from a variety of systems where standardized policies or procedures may or may not exist and make recommendations for best practices in policies and procedures for data collection and maintenance.
  • Liaise with other campus units on behalf of Campus Strategy, working collaboratively with campus teams to develop sustainable systems, mechanisms, and procedures for tracking institutional data toward strategic goals.
  • Consult on strategic decisions regarding how best to utilize or adapt current systems when embarking on change management efforts.
  • Prepare spreadsheets, reports, summaries, charts, slides, and other visual aids to describe findings, propose solutions, and predict trends.
  • Assist with troubleshooting, analyzing, resolving, monitoring, and documenting complex user inquiries, as needed.
  • Participate in new and established cross-functional data initiatives to support process improvements, programs, and policy reviews.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Library Science, or Data Science. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelors degree on a year for year basis.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience designing and developing reports and data visualizations in a complex environment with multiple data sets and databases and varying quality of data.
  • Experience with systems, processes, and procedures linked to business intelligence and strategy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in a relevant subject area, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Library Science, or Data Science.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience designing and developing reports and visualizations in a complex environment with multiple data sets and databases and varying quality of data.
  • Current or prior work experience at the University of Colorado
  • Experience with Smartsheet.
  • Experience with customer relationship management systems (CRMs) and/or human relationship management systems (HRMs).
  • Experience working with SQL or Power BI.
  • Experience creating data visualizations in Tableau.
  • Experience with best practices for data integrity, analysis, visualization, and security.

Competencies/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to use MS Excel to present, summarize and manipulate data (including tables, charts, and graphs)
  • Ability to translate functional requirements to technical specifications
  • Advanced analytical and research skills, as demonstrated by the ability to develop, assess, and blend information from a wide variety of data sources.
