Job Overview:

A Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and evaluating the structural components and systems of buildings and infrastructure projects. They ensure that structures are safe, durable, and compliant with building codes and regulations.  A Structural Engineer is a professional responsible for designing, analyzing, and ensuring the integrity and stability of buildings, bridges, and other structures. They play a crucial role in ensuring that structures can withstand various loads, including gravity, environmental factors, and dynamic forces.  The structural engineer will analyze project goals, design structural elements, perform field visits, make safety recommendations, and maintain a project database.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply technical knowledge to meet all stakeholder expectations.
  • Ensure that each completed project meets local codes, regulations, and quality standards.
  • Deliver structurally sound designs capable of withstanding routine use, the elements, and inspection.
  • Monitor project progress, ensuring it’s completed on time and within budget.
  • Set design protocols according to relevant codes and standards.
  • Advise civil engineers on best practices in building design and execution.
  • Analyze project goals and perform structural calculations.
  • Design structural elements of each project using computer software like AutoCAD, Revit, or RISA
  • Make recommendations for materials to use and safety measures to take.
  • Oversee project management, like tracking budgets and maintaining a database of projects and their progress.
  • Review shop drawings and provide feedback to colleagues.
  • Perform field visits and write reports detailing project viability and progress.

 

Design and Analysis:

  • Design structural systems, including foundations, beams, columns, and connections, to meet project requirements and safety standards.
  • Analyze structures using engineering software and mathematical calculations to determine their ability to withstand various loads.

Structural Assessment:

  • Inspect existing structures to assess their condition and provide recommendations for repair, retrofit, or demolition as necessary.

Materials and Construction Methods:

  • Select appropriate materials and construction techniques to ensure the structural integrity and safety of projects.
  • Stay informed about new materials and construction technologies.

Compliance and Codes:

  • Ensure that designs and construction adhere to local, state, and national building codes and regulations.
  • Obtain necessary permits and approvals for projects.

Team Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with architects, construction professionals, and other engineers to integrate structural systems into overall building designs.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure project objectives are met.

Project Management:

  • Manage and coordinate structural engineering aspects of projects, including timelines, budgets, and resources.
  • Provide progress reports to project stakeholders.

Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct structural inspections and quality control to ensure construction adheres to the design specifications.
  • Address issues and resolve design or construction challenges.

Safety and Risk Assessment:

Environmental Considerations:

  • Promote sustainable design and construction practices to reduce the environmental impact of projects.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering; a master's degree may be preferred for some positions.
  • Professional licensure as a Structural Engineer (SE) or Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, codes, and design software.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) and structural analysis tools.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Problem-solving skills to quickly address issues that arise on-site and keep projects on track.
  • Proven drafting skills, exemplified by a portfolio of prior work.
  • Working knowledge of compliance, zoning, and building legislation.

  • Experience in a leadership role.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include frequent walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching. 
  • Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • May require travel.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Must be on call to address delays, emergencies, bad weather, and other issues at the jobsite. 
  • Standing up to 90%; sitting up to 10%.

Work Environment:

  • Structural Engineers work in a combination of office and field settings. They often spend time on construction sites to inspect ongoing projects and may need to work irregular hours to meet project deadlines or address structural issues as they arise.
