Structural Engineer
This isn’t your typical design desk job. As a Structural Engineer with a focus on forensics and restoration, you'll dig deep into the causes of building failures, whether it's a collapsed roof, cracked foundation, or fire-damaged structure. You'll play detective and designer, uncovering what went wrong and crafting smart, practical solutions to make things right again.
Who You Are:
You’re a problem-solver at heart: curious, analytical, and driven to understand not just what happened, but why. You’re a licensed Professional Engineer in Minnesota (or an EIT on your way to becoming a P.E.) with a background in structural or civil engineering. Maybe you’ve already been involved in forensic investigations or restoration work, or maybe you’ve just realized that this is the kind of hands-on, high-impact work you were meant to do – even if you have no previous experience. You communicate clearly, and you’re comfortable collaborating with architects, attorneys, contractors, and clients alike.
What You’ll Do:
- Investigate structural failures, foundation movement, water infiltration, fire damage, and other performance issues.
- Conduct field inspections and site evaluations, and gather evidence using visual assessments, testing, and analysis tools.
- Model structural systems and analyze performance using software like RISA, ANSYS, or equivalent.
- Collaborate with architects, legal teams, contractors, and insurers to develop repair strategies or support litigation.
- Write clear, concise engineering reports and occasionally present findings as a witness.
- Contribute to restoration designs, construction quality assurance, and commissioning for buildings of all types and ages.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
- 3+ years of structural engineering experience with buildings.
- PE license (or ability to obtain it within a reasonable timeframe).
- Experience with structural analysis, design, or forensic investigation.
- Familiarity with building codes, industry standards (ASTM, ASCE, NFPA), and best practices in structural forensics.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects at once.
