JOB DESCRIPTION:

The MESA Engineering Program on the campus of Sac State is seeking six Student Assistants for the MEP Mentor program. Peer Mentors provide one-on-one peer support, guidance, & motivation to new MEP students throughout the academic year. Peer Mentors serve as a key resource for students by sharing their experiences, exposure, and knowledge about how to be a successful college student and strategies for eliminating barriers to academic, personal, and professional success.


Conditions of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

UEI does not allow employees to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI position for a different UEI position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a weeks notice.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (i.e., degree, license, or official transcript), DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.


Prerequisites

Must be an ECS student and member of the MESA Engineering Program.


Majors/Fields of Study

Engineering, Computer Science, or Construction Management


Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours of up to 5 hours per week. Final work schedule to be determined by supervisor.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per workweek (Sunday Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring & summer).


M inimum Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Ability to plan, execute, and strategize progress towards goal completion.
  • Operate as a motivated self-starter or utilize an empathy-driven approach while building relationships.
  • Ability to identify new solutions to creatively solve problems.
  • Operate productively without constant direct supervision.
  • Ability to make critical decisions in compliance with the program goals.
  • Must be a MESA Engineering Program (MEP) student to apply.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve 6-10 mentees individually throughout the 2022-23 Academic Year.
  • Provide intentional and individualized mentorship to mentees on a weekly basis, for a minimum of a 5 hours per week.
  • Spend time preparing for each mentoring session, including curriculum building, strategy brainstorming, and exploration of goal management techniques.
  • Utilize a student-development framework while working with students, with an emphasis on skill building within: time management, academic success and studying strategies, stress management, goal setting, strengths and values exploration, career-readiness exploration, and anything else related to personal and professional development.
  • Submit monthly progress reports on each mentee.
  • Attend bi-weekly staff meetings.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment.

MEP creates a family-like culture where students feel supported in their academic careers.
