Job Title: Substation Relay Technician
Location: All of NJ, OH, and the Midwest
Experience MUST HAVEs: Testing experience in the substation relay field
Compensation: $60k-$130k base + Benefits (Salary is flexible based on experience)
Employment Type: Full-time
Eligibility: U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Visa holders (Visa holders must be able to communicate effectively)

Capabilities and Responsibilities:
  • 3+ years of relay testing & substation commissioning experience (15kV through 500kV)
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without need for sponsorship
  • Ability to drive and travel to client utility sites across the U.S., with overnight stays
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and Word
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relay testing expertise onsite with utilities
  • System checks, wiring checking & functionality
  • Full-lifecycle commissioning and testing experience of substations
  • Troubleshooting & problem analysis of protection equipment
  • Apparatus testing & analysis using tools such as Doble protection, ProTest, AcSELerator, or Renoserv
  • Experience with substation lightning stroke shielding plans and grounding plans
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to lead and hold meetings with utility clients
  • Must have an Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, or the educational and/or experience equivalent
  • Demonstrated electrical and mechanical aptitude, with the ability to work with small, delicate, and complex equipment
  • Ability to analyze electrical control and protection problems and produce accurate results
Job Duties:
  • Complete neat and accurate records, reports, and time-reporting documents
  • Install, test, maintain, repair, and operate circuit breakers, transformers, capacitors, regulators, batteries, relays, meters, control equipment, and other related equipment in substations, power plants, or other electrical facilities
  • Perform tasks such as wiring energized panels, inspecting substations, observing and recording circuit loads and data, and completing reports on relay targets and apparatus troubles
  • Perform routine inspections of work performed by contractors; operate small bucket trucks and aerial lift equipment
  • Diagnose and correct electrical troubles of limited complexity in circuits and equipment
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance using test equipment like relay test sets, multimeters, ohmmeters, microohmmeters, circuit breaker analyzers, gas analyzers, timers, and other similar equipment
  • Test, calibrate, troubleshoot, and adjust various types of induction relays (e.g., differential, ground, reverse power, directional overcurrent)
  • Test and calibrate static and microprocessor relays of limited complexity on distribution circuits
  • Test, repair, and maintain substation remote alarms and equipment
  • Perform switching operations and report abnormal conditions to the appropriate Dispatcher
  • Use common hand tools and power tools to remove and replace wiring, covers, panels, and insulation during construction, maintenance, or troubleshooting activities
  • Assist Commissioning Engineering when checking electrical apparatus and new installations
  • Trace and identify circuits, calibrate and adjust protective relays, and prepare reports
  • Modify wiring in AC and DC distribution and control circuits as necessary
  • Familiarize with substation circuits, equipment, operations, and controls
  • Complete all required Job Skill Demonstrations and progression tests to qualify for promotion to the Substation Relay Tester classification
