Summer Day Camp Counselor

Employer: Camp Fire Heart of Oklahoma - Camp DaKaNi

Start Date: May 23, 2023 End Date: July 29, 2023

Hours: Monday- Friday 8am-4pm

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead and actively participate with small group of elementary school youth in scheduled and free time activities
  • Keep camper safety as top priority at all times
  • Supervise and assist campers with daily lunches
  • Maintain knowledge of how to instruct at zip line, challenge course, and fishing
  • Assist activity leaders at rock wall, boating, and archery
  • Be physically and mentally prepared for all daily activities and be able to adjust to changing weather
  • Help prepare groups lunches
  • Complete daily group and personal kapers (tasks)
  • Assist Camp Directors in pre-season preparation and post-season maintenance
  • Must attend 5 day staff training
  • Maintain Home in the woods
  • Maintain our screen-free environment (no cell phones or other electronics around campers)
  • Maintain knowledge of all campers in the group, including names and important medical needs or allergies
  • Be courteous and professional at all times with parents and staff
  • Maintain a positive environment that promotes encouragement, growth, and fun for campers
  • Be a positive role model and leader for campers
  • Be punctual every day and communicate promptly with camp directors about any unexpected absences
  • Maintain personal health both at camp and during off time to avoid absences
  • Assist staff with keeping clean and tidy facilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or at a camp preferred
  • Passion for working with children in an outdoor environment
  • Must be comfortable working with youth of all ages and abilities
  • Ability to maintain boundaries appropriate to role with youth
  • Ability to engage youth in a variety of participatory roles
  • Knowledge of how to use appropriate discipline when necessary
  • Have good communication skills
  • Possess strong leadership skills
  • Knowledge of icebreakers and various games to play with campers during down time
  • Emotionally mature, willing to accept responsibility
  • Exhibit ability to place campers needs above their own
  • Team player that can relate positively to all staff, volunteers and campers
  • Able to identify and respond to safety and environmental hazards and inform staff and guests appropriately
  • Flexible and able to work in team-focused, fast-paced atmosphere; must be able to multi-task

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform physically active roles, requiring full body movement and the strength to lift and carry up to 50-175 pounds. Require the physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing/walking for long periods of time (60 minutes or more). Duties of the job will often include working on uneven and unpaved surfaces, as found in summer camp environments; majority of camp areas are not wheelchair accessible. Must be able to stoop, squat, bend, reach, twist, crawl and perform work at or above the shoulder. Must have the physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; able to assist camper and guests in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury). The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. Must be able to speak and communicate clearly.

The employees work during the camp program activities often involves working in the outdoors in all weather and surface conditions. The employee will work with youth ages 5 through 18 in a variety of roles, including instructional. The noise level in the work environment will vary from quiet, as expected in an office environment, to loud, as expected in working in an outdoor camp environment and interacting with youth.
