The Opportunity:


Summer Intern & Research Assistant with a Central PA Startup (Pennsylvania Residents Only). This position is contingent upon contract award, with work expected to begin in May 2024 and to end in approximately September 2024.


This is a paid, 40-hour week position in Reedsville, PA, a 30-minute drive from University Park, home of the Pennsylvania State University. This isNOT a remote work opportunity. The Summer Intern and Research Assistant is expected to fully engage in daily on-site work and collaboration with the team located in Reedsville.


USD Pay Range:$25.00-$35.00/hour, commensurate with competencies, skills, knowledge, education, and experience.


  • This internship is designed to be a quality learning experience for the best, brightest, and most ambitious undergraduate (junior/senior) and graduate students in our area, whose academic pursuits include working toward a B.S. (or higher) degree in Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, or other related fields.
  • This internship is offered in a start-up, entrepreneurial setting that offers unique opportunities to integrate, expand, refine, and synthesize knowledge from diverse disciplines, courses, and areas of experience. It provides opportunities to apply higher-order thinking skills (critical thinking, observation, recording, analysis, interpretation, evaluation, complex problem solving, etc.) to real world work situations while acquiring and refining leadership, teamwork, and personal accountability skills.

Who We Are:


Cignal is a growing tech startup and the creator of the Cignal Engine: an environment to safely test and exercise AI vision models before deploying them in the real world.Cignal Engine combines simulation, AI/ML, and other mathematical techniques to create high-fidelity synthetic image streams that are virtually indistinguishable from real data.


The Cignal Engine is used to test how well transportation security AI/ML models detect firearms, explosives, narcotics, and other dangerous items on people and in baggage and cargo.


What You'll Do:


You'll study existing and novel techniques for performing image analysis, and you'll examine if AI/ML may be applied to improve the efficiency or performance of these techniques. You will personally behelping to make air travel safer whilehaving a substantial impact on introducing a game-changing, cutting-edge product! Duties and responsibilities include:


  • Researchingdifferent computational and numerical methods in the field of machine vision
  • Reading and summarizing research reports and papers
  • Working with engineers to implement prototype demonstrations of thetechniques you've researched
  • Preparing presentations and technical reports that detail your work and findings


What We're Looking For:


  • Technical writing ability
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data, algorithms, and numerical methods
  • Interest in AI/ML and neural networks
  • Strong math proficiency
  • Background in mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline


Nice to Have:


  • Software development/scripting experience
  • Experience with modeling and computation
  • Experience with computer vision
  • LaTeX experience
