Job Description

The Summer 2024 Internship Program is an initiative through the Office of the City Administrator, whose 25+ divisions and departments operate core internal and public-facing services in San Francisco. The internship program is open to current college juniors, seniors, graduate students, recent grads and other applicants who have an interest in working for local government. This internship program is a great opportunity to work alongside and shadow professionals in desired fields of interest and truly see the impact being made in public sector divisions through a hands-on learning experience!

The duration of this internship is 12 weeks, with an opportunity to extend based on departmental need.

Individuals hired will be appointed to a class 9922 Public Service Aide to Professional positions and compensated $27.46 per hour.

About Animal Care & Control Division:

The San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control (SFACC) is a taxpayer-funded, open-admission animal shelter. Since 1989, SFACC has provided housing, care, and medical treatment to wild, exotic and domestic stray, lost, abandoned, sick, injured, and surrendered animals. SFACCs doors are open to all animals in need regardless of species, medical, or behavioral condition.

The shelter also enforces all state and local Animal Control and Welfare laws and is the first responder for animals in natural disasters and emergencies.

  • SFACC shelters homeless, neglected, and abused animals and provide humane education and many other services to the community.

  • SFACC is the local agency that investigates animal cruelty, enforces animal welfare laws, rescues injured and orphaned wildlife and birds, and aids domestic animals in distress.

SFACC aims to adopt, re-home, or reunite domestic animals with their guardians and to release wildlife to their native habitat.

Our Animal Care & Control division has Animal Care Trainee internship positions for candidates interested in animal care support and safety. Under direct supervision, the Animal Care Trainee maintains safe and sanitary facilities for shelter animals and the public and provides humane handling and care for the shelter. This is a husbandry-related position so while there will be hands-on interaction with the animals, the care and maintenance of their enclosures are the specific job focus. Trainees will also perform additional related duties.

Interns will gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced professionals while participating in various activities in the assigned City department.

Essential Duties:

The applicant will be assisting our full-time animal care attendants with the animals in our shelter; this requires a lot of cleaning and laundry to ensure daily shelter operations. They will be working with mostly with birds, cats, kittens, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs.

  • Cleaning the animal enclosures

  • Helping to feed shelter animals

  • Washing dishes and doing laundry

  • Sanitizing litterboxes and transfer cages

  • Acting as a runner between teams during peak hours

  • Making Enrichment Items



Qualifications:
Qualifications

_ Desirable Qualifications:_

H.S diploma and 3 months previous experience in a shelter, zoo, or veterinary setting as a volunteer or employee.

Experience Applicants must have had recent formal or informal animal care experience, which could include having a pet in their household, pet sitting, or dog walking.

Additional Requirements:

  • It is important that the applicant does not have allergies to any animals (fur or dander), cleaning products, hay, or peanut butter.

  • The applicant must be able follow directions carefully to protect themselves, their coworkers, and the animals in their charge.

  • The environment is loud and can be stressful so the applicant should be prepared for that.

  • This is a position involving animal sanitation so the applicant should wear clothing with no holes but that can get dirty, long pants and close-toed, skid -resistant shoes. Applicants with long hair should be able to pull it back as needed.

  • Candidates must be prepared to receive on-the-job training to acquire the ability to apply professional standards and skills as they relate to animal care support and safety.
