Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as a Switchboard Operator I to work at Pontiac Correctional Center. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, task oriented, has excellent organizational skills and shows great attention to detail. This position performs switchboard and communication services at Pontiac Correctional Center, primarily involving responsibility for accuracy and speed in placing and answering calls and responding to non-technical inquiries. Duties also include performing incidental clerical work such as maintaining files and logs. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply. Job Responsibilities

  • Operates a PABX switchboard.
  • Provides routine non-technical information, direction, and assistance to callers or visitors.
  • Records call in messages.
  • Performs routine and simple clerical duties.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.


Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program, may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers at least two (2) years of experience operating a switchboard.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience communicating with the public on a one-to-one basis.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience performing routine and simple clerical duties.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
