Description:
TrainingFolks is seeking a Technical Training and Equipment Instructor to deliver competency‑based training to utility company personnel in classroom and hands‑on field settings, emphasizing safe operation, preventive maintenance, and regulatory compliance for equipment, tools, vehicles, and related technical practices. Responsibilities include preparing and delivering instruction, leading practical exercises, conducting learner assessments and formal competency evaluations, and maintaining accurate training records in paper form and the company learning management system. This professional, non‑supervisory role requires independent classroom and field leadership, strict adherence to safety standards and applicable regulations, and may provide subject‑matter expertise in designing lesson plans, training materials, and assessments, and ensure trainees achieve measurable competency outcomes.
Key Required Skills
- Adult learning and classroom management: engage adult learners, manage different learning styles, and maintain a safe, productive learning environment.
- Hands‑on technical instruction: lead practical lab/field exercises and demonstrate correct equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Assessment & evaluation: implement and objectively evaluate trainee competency and performance on practical exams, and document results.
- Communication and interpersonal skills: deliver clear verbal instruction, be receptive to constructive feedback with a willingness to modify behavior and instructional approach; and demonstrate professional relationship management with stakeholders and vendors.
- Safety & regulatory knowledge: current understanding of OSHA, DOT, and applicable utility regulations and the ability to translate them into actionable training content and delivery.
- Equipment proficiency: expert operation and maintenance of light- and medium-duty equipment (e.g., aerial work platforms, forklifts, skid steers, flex-track tractors/dozers, commercial tractors with trailer, hoists, hand/power and trenching/excavation tools)
- Training and equipment management: maintain training records and course materials; organize and maintain equipment/tools for readiness; demonstrate strong time management and independent leadership while working autonomously with minimal supervision.
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with certification programs and trainer accreditations (e.g., OSHA trainer, forklift/train-the-trainer).
- First Aid/CPR and basic emergency response training instructor credentials.
- Commercial vehicle operation experience beyond the minimum (e.g., tractor-trailer experience, in-plant heavy equipment).
- Microsoft Office skills
- 2 years (approx. 4,000 hours) of recent, related occupational experience outside the field of education performing hands-on equipment operation/maintenance. Proven full‑time instructor experience preferred.
- Commercial driving: Possess current CDL‑A with at least 2 years of verifiable CDL‑A driving experience within the last 3 years (if role requires driving/trailer operation).
Qualifications:
- Minimum education: Associate degree in a related field OR degree-equivalent through verified work experience combined with applicable education and training.
- Age and driving: Must be at least 21 years of age. Valid driver’s license continuously held for at least the past 5 years.
- Commercial driving: Possess current CDL‑A or CDL-B with experience driving light-duty equipment; willingness and ability to obtain a CLD-A license
- Driving/criminal record: No record of operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked license in the last 5 years. Must pass criminal history background check and driving record check.
- Physical demands: Able to conduct hands‑on training outdoors and in field conditions, including extended standing, lifting moderate weight, climbing ladders/platforms, and working at heights where required.
- Clearance and testing: Must pass pre‑employment drug screen and any required medical or respirator fit testing as applicable.
- Certifications: Willingness and ability to obtain First Aid/CPR and equipment‑specific trainer certifications.
- Location & schedule: Must be available for on‑site instruction and occasional travel (within the state of Michigan) to customer/client locations; flexible schedule to support full‑time classroom and field programs.
