Position Summary

This position will be split into two main components. The selected candidate will help with field work for approximately 3 months in the Hudson River in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservations Hudson River Fisheries Unit located in New Paltz, NY and help develop and implement outreach and extension programs in the Division of Marine Resources in Kings Park, NY for approximately 3 months.

Field component:

Fisheries technician will provide technical assistance with the research and monitoring of adult Atlantic sturgeon on the Hudson River.

Core job duties will include but are not limited to:

  • The use of fisheries gears (gill nets) to collect adult Atlantic sturgeon.
  • Operation of outboard boats for deploying and retrieving gear
  • Fish identification and enumeration
  • Collection of biological data and water quality data
  • Data entry and quality assurance
  • Assist with other long-term fisheries independent surveys to monitor striped bass, Atlantic sturgeon, American shad, river herring, American eel, and blue crab.

Successful applicants must be willing to work challenging hours (e.g., early mornings/late evenings) in inclement weather, able to lift fifty pounds, able to maneuver in and out of boats, and able to hand operate all gears (strenuous pulling and lifting).


Outreach & Communications Component:

The technician will review and synthesize literature to develop and refine outreach materials to educate the public about the New York Ocean Action Plan and issues related to Ocean Acidification in New York. Technicians will use knowledge gained from the experience with the Hudson River Fisheries Unit to coordinate with the NYSDECs Ocean Program Unit, located in Kings Park, NY. This position is still located in New Paltz, NY and most coordination will occur remotely.

Core job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Regular remote check-ins with Ocean Program Staff to clarify priorities and review progress.
  • Performing literature searches and review to compile and synthesize information.
  • Developing communication outreach products with coordination and collaboration of the Ocean Program and other DEC staff.
  • Reviewing and providing input on other program or partner resources.
  • Travel to the Marine Resources office in Kings Park, NY may be required for the position. Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries and outreach experience. Additional evaluation may be based on the applicants knowledge and experience with computer use, databases, data analyses, and report preparation. Applicants must demonstrate that they are able to work independently and must also be able to focus and perform computer work on in-office days.

This is a term 6-month position. Contingent on funding, positions will start on April 15, 2024, and will extend through September 17, 2024
