Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Temporary Biological Sciences Research Technician 2: Pollinator Research Assistant Crew Lead position for the College of Forestry, at Oregon State University ( OSU ).

This position will be located in Shingletown, California.

This position is through OSUs college of Forestry, with the Forest Animal Ecology Lab led by Dr. Jim Rivers. It exists to help the graduate student, Megan Sampognaro, manage logistics in the field, delegate to other crew members and collect data on bee communities in managed forests for her Masters thesis.

Key Responsibilities
20%: Perform data collection, entry, and quality control.
20%: Collect wild bees using a variety of techniques (netting, traps).
20%: Quantify floral resources.
20%: Quantify nesting habitat.
5%: Help train crew members on established protocols, policies and procedures.
5%: Collect, organize, and maintain field gear.
5%: Assist crew leader with planning, logistics, daily tasks, navigation.
2.5%: Problem solve logistical issues and conflict resolution.
2.5%: Assist with additional project-related duties as needed.

What We Require

Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science) and one year of experience related to the area of assignment at the Biological Research Technician 1 level; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

What We Would Like You to Have
  • One or more seasons of field work experience.
  • Prior leadership experience (may be paid work experience, internships, or volunteer work).
  • Experience in entomology, animal ecology or a related field.
  • Insect collection and identification experience.
  • Plant identification experience or familiarity with Northern California flora.
  • Previous experience sampling pollinators in field settings.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Field work will consist of physically demanding work in challenging conditions (heat, cold, rain, sun, steep slopes, loose rock, logging slash, stinging insects, hazardous plants); working up to 10-hour days, including some weekends; camping for up to a week; driving on logging roads; and navigating through difficult forest terrain, likely without cell service. The ability to carry heavy gear (30+ lbs.) on steep slopes is required. Field safety training will be provided. Travel by car will happen daily to sites, and field crew is responsible for getting themselves to our housing site initially.
