Job Duties

The position serves as the lead building and trades technician for the Roanoke district by performing trade and labor work functions and maintaining builds and grounds for the DMV customer service centers and related DMV facilities. The technician performs buildings and grounds evaluations for any maintenance needs, performs repairs requested through the On-Base work order system, estimates costs for necessary maintenance repairs, secures materials and performs repairs.

Building repairs may include but are not limited to HVAC, plumbing and sewer, electrical, carpentry, and painting. Ground maintenance may include but is not limited to parking lots, landscaping, painting, brush removal, and signage installation. Other related maintenance responsibilities may include but are not limited to roofing, space/asset management, safety equipment, and inspections.
In addition, the position ensures all facilities comply with state and federal regulations. You may have to work nights and weekends periodically. You may have to work in other statewide districts, including overnight lodging. You may have to work in extreme weather conditions.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, serves approximately 6.2 million licensed drivers and ID card holders with over 8.4 million registered vehicles. In addition, DMV serves many businesses, including dealers, fuel tax customers, rental companies, driving schools, other state agencies, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Minimum Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of a variety of construction materials and their uses.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safety procedures at all times.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform building maintenance; diagnose building system malfunctions and correct systems operations; perform basic repairs to HVAC, electrical, and plumbing equipment; perform carpentry and painting work.
  • Demonstrate ability to read and interpret instructions, manuals, drawings, and blueprints; to use hand and power tools; to estimate costs for equipment and materials; to effectively prioritize and schedule work requests, special projects, and day-to-day duties; to meet deadlines; to direct and lead the work of others; to make sound decisions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, tactfully, and courteously with co-workers, management, and vendors.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a point balance of under six demerit points and no major convictions.
