Availability to work weekends, holidays, and flexibility to cover as needed. Responsibilities Under general supervision, plan, coordinate, and supervise the operations and maintenance division, including training and retraining of subordinates; coordinate the safety and security programs of the Transportation Department; prepare a variety of reports related to bus operations and vehicle maintenance; and perform related work as required. Management Responsibility – A supervisory position responsible for assigning, coordinating, and supervising the work of staff assigned to the City’s Transportation Department operations and maintenance programs. Provides supervision and work coordination for staff assigned to the day‑to‑day activities of the City’s transit operations and vehicle maintenance programs, analyzes workloads, establishes priorities and assignments; instructs and supervises all supervisors and subordinate staff in the Operations and Maintenance Division; oversees enforcement of safety and security regulations; participates in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff; maintains and updates day‑to‑day operations, personnel, training and related records; consults with others regarding equipment malfunctions or equipment purchases; monitors system operations including scheduling, on‑time performance, passenger relations, accident investigation, system safety and security, and bus operator and corporate shop rules and regulations; prepares budget requests and controls expenditures; ensures compliance with City, state and federal regulations; represents assigned functions with City staff and other governmental agencies as delegated. Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate California driver’s license. Candidate must obtain their California Class B permit within 2 weeks of employment and their California Class B license within 3 months. Training and Experience Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. A bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or transportation administration is desirable. Work Background: Four years of progressively responsible and varied professional support experience, including at least two years in a supervisory function. Experience within a public transit system is desirable. Knowledge Of Modern principles, practices, and techniques pertaining to the operation of a public transit system. Principles of supervision and training. Principles of modern security requirements, disaster/emergency management preparedness. Principles and practices in the preparation of route scheduling and optimum personnel and equipment utilization. Principles of office management and record keeping. Accident/incident investigation and reporting techniques. Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions. Federal drug and alcohol regulations for transit agencies. Research methods and procedures. Ability To Perform complex administrative and supervisory activities related to the function and operation of a transit system. Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff. Administer a comprehensive safety and accident prevention program. Maintain clear and accurate records. Prepare clear and concise reports. Research, collect, and analyze information related to transit operations and maintenance. Conduct facility and safety inspections to identify health, safety, and security issues and recommend corrective actions. Interpret, explain, apply, and enforce a variety of laws, rules, and regulations. Represent the City’s Transportation Department transit operations and maintenance functions with concerned individuals, organizations, and other governmental agencies. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Benefits CalPERS 2.7% @ 55 or 2% @ 62, depending on member status. Classic members pay 8% toward their employee contribution to CalPERS. New CalPERS members pay 7.5% toward their CalPERS retirement. 11 medical plans available, including dental & vision coverage, maximum paid by City is $1,650.00/mo. (3‑party coverage). Or in lieu of coverage, $350 per month medical incentive plan. 12 paid Holidays. Up to 80 Vacation leave hours. Up to 96 Sick leave hours. $30,000 term life insurance, $30,000 AD&D. 30 hours bereavement leave per eligible incident. Up to $1,500 per year tuition reimbursement (annual budget permitting).
