Certification Details
- Report directly to the Warden/Facility Administrator or Health Service Administrator for daily clinical operations within the medical department.
- Manage and supervise daily nursing/clinical activities.
- Supervise nursing and non-licensed health care providers in the performance of their duties and evaluate as prescribed by the facility and corporate policy.
- Train new employees; evaluate performance and prepare written performance appraisals.
- Resolve complaints and disputes effectively; take corrective or disciplinary action as needed.
- Develop work schedules for subordinates and approve leave requests.
- Provide direct patient care within scope of licensure; apply appropriate nursing skills in care and treatment of inmates/residents.
- Provide adequate staffing at the facility; fill in during short staffing periods; perform nursing duties including executing physician’s orders, assisting physicians, dispensing medications, treating emergencies, screening patients for referrals, and performing intakes.
- Perform triage and physical assessments.
- Perform and direct emergency care and procedures as needed and call Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
- Monitor inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.
- Provide guidance, supervise and monitor nursing care by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
- Maintain good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers and outside provider agencies.
- Utilize established corporate, facility and correctional policies and procedures in decision making, using sound independent judgment.
- Regularly evaluate medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.
- Maintain absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
- Assist Health Service Administrator with review of medical files to ensure documentation of all services provided.
- Closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses.
- Audit pharmacy use for formulary adherence as directed or required.
- Comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances.
- Observe and record inmate/resident behavior.
- Inspect medical unit for contraband items; securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment.
- Provide health counseling and education individually or in groups as required.
- Assist Health Service Administrator in preparing and maintaining various records, reports and logs using appropriate grammar and timely processing.
- Read, analyze, comprehend and interpret medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents.
- Review, process and respond to lawsuits via corporate counsel; attend court hearings when necessary.
- Facilitate NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO accreditation of the medical program by providing required efficiency and appropriate medical services.
- Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required; take appropriate action in serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
Job Details
- Must have at least 1 year of clinical supervisory experience.
- Corrections experience is strongly preferred.
- One (1) year of professional nursing experience.
- Graduate from an accredited college, university or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing.
- Must possess current licensure in the state of employment.
- A valid driver's license is required.
