Setting: Acute Care
Hours/week: 37.5 Hours per Week

Job Summary :
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Pathology Assistant to support the Pathology Department in an acute care setting. The Pathology Assistant will assist pathologists in the preparation, gross examination, and dissection of surgical specimens while ensuring accurate specimen handling, documentation, and compliance with regulatory standards. 


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation, gross examination, and dissection of surgical pathology specimens.
  • Describe gross anatomic features and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination under pathologist supervision.
  • Prepare frozen sections and permanent sections for light microscopy, including photography as requested.
  • Ensure accurate specimen accessioning, labeling, and documentation.
  • Retrieve clinical history, laboratory data, imaging, and relevant case materials as required.
  • Assist in coding gross specimens during description and maintain organization of the grossing workflow.
  • Utilize and troubleshoot voice recognition systems and maintain dictation templates.
  • Assist with preparation, staining, and cover slipping for frozen sections.
  • Maintain inventory of gross room supplies and ensure safe use of grossing equipment, including handsaw and cryostat.
  • Enter required data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), including block and tissue counts.
  • Select and prepare specimens for decalcification when appropriate.
  • Assist with post-mortem examinations as needed.
  • Maintain communication with pathologists and histology laboratory staff.
  • Participate in updating the Gross Room Manual and other departmental documentation.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.
     

Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and chemical handling procedures
  • Proficiency with EPIC charting system preferred
  • Experience with LIS systems
     

Requirements:

  • New York State License – Required
  • BLS Certification (AHA) – Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related science from an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Program or equivalent
  • ASCP Certification preferred
  • COVID card
