Position Purpose:

\n

The Certified Respiratory Therapist is responsible for administering safe and competent respiratory care as ordered by a physician, with emphasis in specialty areas such as Emergency, Neonatal, Pediatric, Geriatric, and Critical Care. This includes monitoring mechanical ventilation, administering medications, patient assessment, understanding ramifications of hemodynamic monitoring, understanding blood work results, monitoring, and training.

\n

Essential Functions and Basic Duties:

\n
  • Competently deliver all Respiratory Care procedures as outlined in the department policy and procedure manual.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all Respiratory Care procedures per department policy.
  • Verify Respiratory Care physician's orders.
  • Update and complete patient information to reflect the current clinical status.
  • Attend and participate in department in-services, meetings, and patient care rounds.
  • Keep Supervisor informed of changes in workload and patient acuity.
  • Enter all daily services and charges into the department's computer.
  • Demonstrate excellent working knowledge of Respiratory Care instruments and equipment. Perform troubleshooting with appropriate problem resolution.
  • Perform effective airway management, including bag/mask ventilation and assist with intubation. Demonstrate safe suction techniques.
  • Assist in orientation/training of new employees, respiratory/nursing students.
  • Perform arterial blood gas draws.
  • Initiate, maintain, and monitor ventilator patients.
  • Complete required continuous training, education, and comply with personal protective equipment requirements.

Position-Specific Responsibilities:

\n
  • Performs patient charge reconciliation.
  • Verify accuracy and timely submission of time for payroll preparation.
  • Working knowledge of all cardiopulmonary equipment within training and education for CRT.
  • Proficiently perform all assigned modalities provided by cardiopulmonary.
  • Ability to translate medication into neonatal and pediatric doses using proper equipment.
  • Ability to assess geriatric patients for special needs using proper equipment.
  • Ability to assess patient respiratory status, make recommendations for therapeutic interventions, and document status and progress.
  • Demonstrate knowledge to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served within the unit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Comply with attire/dress code policies.

  • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Uphold regulatory requirements and comply with infection control, safety, and risk management policies.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age and legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must pass a background check, drug screen, and breath alcohol test (if applicable).
  • Complete employee health meeting.
\n

Required Education/Licensure/Certification:

\n
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduation from a COARC approved Respiratory Care Program with the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential.
  • BLS certification (within 90 days of hire).
  • NRP certification (within 6 months of hire).
\n

Experience:

\n
  • At least one year of respiratory experience in a hospital setting.
  • Pulmonary diagnostics preferred.
  • Cardiac Diagnostics (EKG, Holter monitor, Event Monitor Cardiac Stress Testing) preferred.
