Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one to two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Undergraduate Research Assistant position with the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Moretti lab studies integrated weed management, and novel weed management technologies mostly in hazelnuts, hops, blueberries and ornamentals cropping systems. This position assists with research conducted in the field, lab, and greenhouse. Fieldwork takes place at multiple locations within and outside of Corvallis and will require a valid drivers license. Work will take place in the lab, field, and greenhouse and includes, but is not limited to, field plot establishment and maintenance, assisting in experimental setup, crop and pest sample processing, data collection and data entry. There is potential to gain hands-on experience with data analysis and presentation, and conducting small-plot field trials for active research projects.

Position Duties
Field: Evaluating research plots in fields that may have been experimentally treated with pests, pathogens, an/or pesticides. Driving a motor pool vehicle may be necessary and will require a background check. Sample collection using field equipment (shovels, rakes, power equipment) will be necessary. Performing duties in difficult conditions (wind, rain, cold and hot temperatures) is expected. Rain gear is supplied.

Greenhouse: Maintaining plants and seedlings, and general greenhouse tasks are expected. This includes identification of weeds, fertilizing plants, cleaning pots, sweeping, and organization. Data collection, detailed note-taking are also expected.

Lab: Students are expected to keep a lab notebook and enter completed work daily. The use of microscopes, pipets, and other technical equipment will be necessary for most tasks in the lab. Washing equipment and clerical work, such as data entry, is also expected.

This position will require work in the field under difficult conditions. Working in rain, mud, and in cold and hot environments is expected. Lab and greenhouse work may require long periods of standing.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered full-time by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Experience in horticulture/weed science is preferred, but anyone interested in agriculture is encouraged to apply.
  • Must be able to follow detailed instructions, comfortable driving a truck, and be willing to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Applicants must be students at Oregon State University and have a valid drivers license.
  • Traveling to remote field sites using a motor pool vehicle for sampling and data collection will be required during spring and summer.
