Upward Bound (UB) Tutor-Mentor (TM) - Student Master 1 Undergrad



Salary/Grade:
$12.00/hr

Hours per Week:

40 Hours



Duration of Appointment:

8 weeks



Job Summary:

Upward Bound participants are high school students attending Hamilton High School. The program includes academic, cultural, and recreational activities. The TM will support and promote academic excellence, mentor students on their path to college matriculation, and foster a sense of community and belonging among participants. The Upward Bound Tutor/Mentor will possess exceptional academic skills and be motivated to help program participants understand subject areas in new ways. The TM may assist in the Upward Bound program by modeling study skills and by mentoring Upward Bound Program Participants. The position is temporary and will be renewed each semester. College Reading and Learning Association certification will be provided and required.



Essential Duties:

Rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate students (by the beginning of the summer program) with a solid academic record and a desire to work with academically at-risk students. All TMs must be available from June 12th - July 20th.

  • Minimum 2.80 GPA
  • At least 30 hours of earned college credit
  • At least one full academic year as a full-time college student

Selected students must pass a fingerprinted state of Ohio background check.



Minimum Qualifications:

Experience leading small groups, tutoring, mentoring, or working with high school-aged youth representing diverse backgrounds, experiences, and interests.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Prior experience with conflict resolution in a previous position (i.e. in a job, student organization, volunteer project)
  • Reliable, with excellent attendance habits
  • Detail-oriented
  • Courteous, welcoming demeanor and dedication to assist students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
