Job Summary:


The Department of Radiology, University of Colorado School of Medicine on Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking an outstanding leader, clinical researcher, mentor, and senior administrator to serve as Vice Chair of Clinical Research. Candidates should have an MD with a successful, sustained, and impactful track record of high-impact scholarship and independent grant funding, conducting large clinical trials, mentoring clinical faculty, radiology residents and medical students in clinical research and recognized interpersonal and leadership skills. We seek an outstanding individual who will oversee and grow our clinical research portfolio and build our clinical research team, as well as work together with the Vice Chair of Research on assisting translational research programs, and effectively represent the interests of radiology research at the Institutional level. A priority for this individual is to improve our national research rankings by increasing extramural support and enhancing the Department’s clinical trials portfolio and academic profile. We value the ability to engage effectively with medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds. We are especially interested in women and/or candidates from minority groups under-represented in medicine.

The Vice Chair of Clinical Research leads the Department’s clinical research operations and, together with the Vice Chair of Research, coordinated associated teams, clinical research projects, initiatives and administrative processes to increase the department’s clinical research portfolio and ensure strategic initiatives are being met while maintaining the highest levels of research quality and compliance. The position directly oversees the staff of clinical coordinators and financial reports, as well as clinical trial investigator teams. As a member of the Department’s leadership team, performance expectations include demonstrating ownership, creating innovation, building collaborations, adaptability, integrity and trust, all features described in our Department’s Code of Conduct. The Vice Chair of Clinical Research oversees trainee research education (together with the Vice Chair of Education), clinical research activities and departmental pilot awards, serves on the Radiology Executive Committee and the Faculty Development Committee, together with the Vice Chair of Research both host our annual Research Symposium, and reports to the Chair of Radiology. We are especially interested in candidates with recognized expertise in translational MRI, molecular MRI/PET, computer/AI/informatics applications, or health services research. Experience in supporting major institutional programs by building and managing strong translational imaging research is desirable. Administrative, biostatistical, as well as IRB and grants administration support are provided.

This position is at least a 0.30 FTE and reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Radiology. The ideal candidate will be expected to be present on campus, be clinically active in their respective specialty or have additional activities in research within which they will spend the balance of their time. Administrative support will be provided for the role. The Vice Chair should have sufficient professional stature to command the respect of faculty members and departmental leadership

Key Responsibilities:

1. INTRA- and INTER-DEPARTMENTAL REPRESENTATION AND COLLABORATION

  • Understands and champions the Radiology Clinical Research mission.
  • Works closely with the Vice Chair of Research and Vice Chair of Education
  • to define and champion Departmental Research and Education mission
  • Supports the School of Medicine Research mission and strategic plan.
  • Fosters collaborative research relationships within the Department and throughout the medical center as well as with the external research community.
  • Works with institutional peers to improve collaboration and operational efficiency.
  • Represents the Department of Radiology during interdepartmental functions related to research operations and strategic initiatives.

2. HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Directly or indirectly manages all research staff and ensures that research staff work together to advance departmental goals.
  • Ensures research staff workflow and assignments ensure most efficient and effective use of personnel and resources.
  • Demonstrates effective teambuilding skills.
  • Works with Chair and Vice Chair of Research to manage clinical research faculty recruitment and performance.
  • Works with practice scientific advisors and mentors to optimize use of their skills and expertise.

3. FACULTY AND TRAINEE ENGAGEMENT

  • Recognizes and supports the role of research in clinical faculty recruitment, engagement, career advancement and retention.
  • Facilitates meetings with clinical section research directors.
  • Provides research exposure and training in the education mission for residents and fellows (clinical and research).
  • Identifies and guides promising trainees and provides guidance on trainee research directions.
  • In collaboration with education program leaders, supports efforts that foster trainee scholarship.
  • Oversees successful completion and presentation of trainee performance quality improvement (PQI) projects.

4. EXTRAMURAL FUNDING DEVELOPMENT AND TRACKING

  • In collaboration with administrative research staff (manager, grants administrator and IRB assistant), supports investigators in preparation and submission of grant applications.
  • Works with clinical investigators to establish clear individualized research program development, grant submission plans, and follow up proactively regarding planned submissions.
  • Alerts investigators to appropriate internal and external funding opportunities.

5. ENSURE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP

  • Manages, delegating as appropriate, the post-award financial processes and tracking for non-federal awards.
  • Works with Department and Research Administration on:
    • Databases on current and expected clinical trials and departmental pilot grants portfolio.
    • Ensures financial compliance with industry, contract and business standards.

6. COMPLIANCE AND CONTRACTS

  • Works with research administration to review and negotiate contracts as needed with industry sponsors.
  • Fosters relationship with and works on updates and amendments to Industry agreements.
  • Oversees sponsor satisfaction with project performance and serves as point person for questions and solutions.
  • Serves as a liaison with the Clinical Trials Office to oversee trial implementation arising from radiology or those that require radiology resources.

7. RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT AND RECOGNITION

  • Coordinates Department’s internal faculty development awards.
  • Together with the Vice Chair of Research coordinate the annual Radiology Retreat Day events, speaker and awards.
  • Oversees process for awarding of and follow up of internal pilot grants.
  • Oversees research-related website development and content.
  • Promotes research activities and accomplishments in Department newsletter and promotional materials, social media and websites.
  • Together with the Vice Chair of Research work with assigned officer in the Office of Development to identify opportunities to advance our research mission.

8. MONITORS DEPARTMENT’S PERFORMANCE

  • Implements goals of the Department’s research strategic plan to promote national and international quality Radiology research published in influential journals and supported by prestigious NIH and foundation sources
  • Prepares clinical research section of Annual report and five-year department review document
  • With Chair and Vice Chair of Research, identifies and tracks metrics related to research and academic productivity of clinical faculty such as:
    • Ranking of Radiology Departments in NIH Grant Awards
    • Total Grants awarded in number and dollars (direct and indirect)
    • Number and impact factor of peer-reviewed publications
    • Percentage of academic and research faculty time/ total FTEs supported by external grants and contracts
    • Research space Dollar density and ranking with other departments
    • External research recognition and awards
    • Faculty appointments to NIH Study Sections
