Job Description

The State University of New York (SUNY) seeks a strategic, forward-looking, problem-solving, and collaborative leader to serve as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA) for the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States.

The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs advises and assists the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost and President of the Research Foundation (EVCAAPP) on academic matters and provides leadership to the academic and academic-related units of SUNY and the SUNY System. The VPAA will join a highly collaborative leadership team in academic affairs working to implement policies established by the SUNY Board of Trustees and advance the Chancellor's and EVCAAPP's strategic priorities.

The Position

The VPAA will play a lead role in the development and execution of an academic strategy for the University which will reflect programs in high demand, economic and workforce development priorities, and foster collaboration, equity, inclusion, and excellence. Reporting to the EVCAAPP, this position, also has responsibility for the staffing, operation, and management of the System's academic affairs office.

As an innovator and collaborator, the VPAA will work with the EVCAAPP, Chancellor, system leadership, campus presidents, campus provosts, academic leaders, and faculty to strengthen and develop contemporary academic programs across the University to provide greater opportunities for students through the development of stronger learning pathways, tighter linkages to post-graduation career opportunities, and richer preparation for participation in civic life and global communities.

The SUNY System Administration office is in Albany, New York.

Essential Functions Of The Position

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of academic standards, policies, and programs to foster academic access and excellence across the System;
  • Work with the EVCAAPP to develop academic policies informed by the best current research on institutional and student success;
  • Promote activities and establish pathways that enable stronger learning outcomes for student completion and success;
  • Provide leadership in curriculum and program development;
  • Ensure educational programs and policies meet growing research and workforce needs and support student post-graduation economic mobility and career success;
  • Promote pedagogical and technological academic innovation, including development of robust high-quality on-line course, credential, and degree offerings;
  • Oversee international programming including Education Abroad, System-wide partnerships, and International Student and Scholar Services;
  • Foster a culture of cooperation and continuous improvement across SUNY and within System Administration;
  • Support the University's deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including recruitment and retention of diverse faculty across disciplines;
  • Using data-driven decision making, provide effective academic leadership, strong administrative oversight, and prudent resource allocation and management;
  • Represent the System to appropriate external groups at the local, regional, and national level as necessary;
  • Work with campuses to monitor, optimize and innovate delivery modalities of course offerings as appropriate;
  • Strengthen the teaching and learning environment, including student sense of belonging; and
  • Lead the identification and implementation of best practices at scale.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience:

An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution and have higher education administrative experience with evidenced responsibilities in a senior academic position and having been a member of a senior leadership team.

The ideal candidate must possess demonstrated experience supervising and managing personnel and budgets in higher education and provide evidence of scholarly achievement and knowledge of current trends and practices in higher education.

The ideal candidate must have strong leadership and management skills coupled with excellent written and verbal communication skills; a practical knowledge of Federal laws and regulations, knowledge and experience with accreditation standards; the ability to manage multiple projects as well as the ability to clearly communicate complex financial and legal requirements to a variety of constituencies; the ability to lead in a collaborative manner with a wide range of internal and external constituencies as well as excellent interpersonal and team-building capabilities is necessary; and must model behavior that reflects the highest ethical and professional standards, exemplifying best practices in job performance, supervision, and staff development.

Additional Information

Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The salary for this position is $175,000-$287,000.
