Job Summary

The Volunteer Coordinator will coordinate the recruitment, development and training of volunteers to enhance the services provided to patients and the community by the hospice.  They are an integral part of the interdisciplinary team, coordinating companionship for patients, respite activities for patient caregivers and education and training in the home.

Accountability

This position reports to the Director of Human Resources

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Follows an individualized Plan of Care established by the interdisciplinary team for each patient.
  2. Immediately reports any patient changes to the RN Case Manager and/or Director of Nursing.
  3. Reviews volunteer applications and interviews and screens them for selection and placement.
  4. Manages and documents ongoing volunteer recruitment efforts.
  5. Initiates appropriate actions needed to assist the volunteers/caregivers needs as they are related to the patient’s loss and grief.
  6. Facilitates communication between the patient, caregiver or volunteer and other hospice team members.
  7. When appropriate, be able to intervene between patient and volunteer conflicts.
  8. Provide ongoing support and training for volunteers
  9. Actively participates in community events to promote volunteer recruitment and community development.
  10. Evaluates volunteer performances per BeLoved Hospice policy.
  11. Must be able to provide training in ethical and professional boundaries and/or coordinate such training for the volunteers.
  12. Works closely with other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate assignment and utilization of volunteers.
  13. Communicates with patient/family/caregiver to assess volunteer needs.
  14. Records services provided through the use of volunteers including monthly reports specifying the types of services and the hours worked.
  15. Assists with the coordination of volunteers at various community or agency functions.
  16. Participates in public speaking engagements for community education purposes and volunteer recruitment.
  17. Provides volunteer recognition as appropriate
  18. Notifies volunteers when a patient death occurs and facilitates closure of the case and coordination with the Bereavement Program as needed.
  19. Understands the basic principles of palliative care and pain management and always acts within scope of practices.
  20. Complies with all documentation policies and procedures and enforces the same of volunteer team.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.

  1. Preferred one year of experience as a Volunteer Coordinator or a recruiter in a healthcare setting.  Will accept other medical management experience, if appropriate.
  2. Knowledge of recruitment strategies and community resources.
  3. Willingness to travel into the community, to attend events and share information about hospice.
  4. Working knowledge of chronic illnesses, capable of explaining the major points of the illness to others.
  5. Must have reliable transportation and maintain auto insurance.
  6. Successful completion of background check pursuant to ORS 181A.195.
  7. Read, write and understand the English language.
  8. Must be able to handle frequent interruptions, problem solve and have exceptional follow through skills. 
  9. Must be able to cope with emotionally charged situations encompassing patients, families, caregivers, and team members.
