Our team is excited to announce a new opportunity for three (3) Program Assistant positions at the Transitional Housing Program in Port Orchard, Washington! This role supports the Transitional Housing Program, which aims to help Veterans in need with stable housing, vocational rehabilitation, and employment. Please note:
This is a project role with an expected end date of February 28th, 2028. The three available positions are either evening or overnight shifts and are as follows:
Thursday through Monday, 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (1 shift)
Monday through Friday, 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. (1 shift)
Thursday through Monday, 12:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (1 shift)

  • This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. The 5% Premium Pay is in effect until June 29th, 2025.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to honorably discharged veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

In this role as the Program Assistant for the Transitional Housing Program in Port Orchard, you will provide administrative and operational support and represent the Transitional Housing Program to clients, participants, and other members of the public during non-traditional business hours, including evenings and weekends. You will also assist in case management activities for individuals with chronic mental health and substance use disorders in a residential 24/7 setting.

Duties

Some of what you'll be doing:

  • Providing onsite after-hours support to clients by assisting with client inquiries, questions, and concerns.
  • Interacting with clients by providing encouragement and support in their treatment and case management plans with an emphasis placed on transitioning to permanent housing, gaining and maintaining employment, and/or seeking public benefits such as disability payment.
  • Explaining the Transitional Housing Program policies, rules, guidelines, procedures, and protocols to clients which reinforce individual client participation agreements and case management plans.
  • Assisting clients by coordinating recreational activities and individual client chores.
  • Responding appropriately to emergency situations an an institutional setting by exercising tact, initiative, and good judgment.
  • Contacting emergency services when needed and communicating with external emergency services personnel regarding medical and/or police emergencies.
  • Briefing incoming staff of recent events and debriefing Case Manager, program supervisors, and program management on unique client concerns, events, emergencies, and other matters.
  • Performing security checks around the buildings occupied by the Transitional Housing Program and shared grounds.
  • Liaisons with Washington Veterans Homes staff regarding the activities and events of the Transitional Housing Program.
  • Assisting with technical and clerical tasks.
  • Accurately maintaining routine/basic logs and records of client behavior and physical security checks.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Two (2) years of full-time clerical experience.
OR
  • Equivalent education and/or experience.
Preferred/Desired:
  • Experience providing services to individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • A general understanding of the social services and health care programs available to Veterans.
  • Ability to work independently yet collaboratively while considering the needs and styles of others.
  • Actively contributes to a work environment that embraces diversity and uses diverse perspectives to enhance the attainment of organizational goals.
  • Clear, timely, persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others.
  • Actively participates and supports efforts to accomplish the organizational mission and goals.
