Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures (OWM), is seeking an individual to serve as Weights and Measures Inspector. This territory includes the Northern Virginia Counties and Cities of: Albemarle, Alexandria, Augusta, Arlington, Caroline, Charlottesville, Clarke, Culpeper, Essex, Fairfax, Fairfax City, Fauquier, Falls Church, Fluvanna, Fredericksburg, Frederick, Greene, Hanover, Harrisonburg, King George, Loudoun, Louisa, Lancaster, Madison, Manassas, Manassas Park, Northumberland, Orange, Page, Prince William, Rappahannock. Rockingham, Richmond County, Staunton, Shenandoah, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Warren, Waynesboro, Westmoreland, and Winchester. Duties include enforcing the Virginia Weights and Measures Laws and related regulations; inspecting, testing to determine the accuracy of measuring devices used commercially in Virginia to include vehicle tank meters, propane meters, bulk plant fuel meters, and associated equipment (ticket printers, printed tickets, invoices, air eliminators, and temperature compensators). Duties also include point of sale inspections, investigating related consumer complaints, completing documentation of activities, inspection and testing of commercial small capacity weighing and measuring devices in assigned location using known standards (mass, volume) and preparing investigative summaries as needed. Position may require occasional overnight travel. The selected applicant must reside or be willing to relocate within a reasonable distance of the assigned territory and be able to meet the physical demands of the position. A state vehicle will be assigned for business use only and must remain parked within the assigned territory.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic knowledge of inspection, investigation, and enforcement procedures. The ability to report facts accurately and to understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations. Must have excellent customer service skills and exceptional communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to operate assigned equipment proficiently and safely and have basic mechanical aptitude and mathematical ability. Effective organizational and planning skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency with standard office software applications required. This position is physically demanding, and the selected individual must have the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. on a regular basis; bend as needed; distinguish colors; exhibit manual dexterity; and be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid Virginia drivers license and have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. High School Diploma/GED required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment such as weights and measures or similar/equivalent field (petroleum, point-of-sale or scales sales or service industries, etc.).
