Job Duties:

The Division of Consolidated Laboratory Service (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a serve as the Workforce Trainer and Instructor (Principal Scientist) for the Division in the Laboratory Systems Improvement and Training (LSIT) Group. This position will support the recruitment and retention of scientists and support staff including outreach efforts as well as the development of customized trainings to continue to develop and retain a competent workforce at DCLS.

LSIT provides services and support for a wide variety of internal and external customers through partnerships and collaboration, to include workforce development, training and outreach, systems improvements, implementation of strategic initiatives, evidence and records management for several programs. One essential function of the LSIT Group is providing effective quality training solutions and programs to meet the needs of our customers.

The selected candidate will use organization skills to work both independently and as a team member, along with the LSIT Manager, to:

  • Pursue, engage, actively participate in and follow up on recruitment opportunities.
  • Develop and launch a workforce training program to expand employee engagement, address skill development and improve employee resilience with a goal of increasing workforce retention.
  • Identify training needs, designing and conducting trainings to meet identified needs, and evaluating the effectiveness of the trainings upon completion.
  • Provide training, workshops and consultation based on needs assessments and best practices both onsite at DCLS and at other locations, on a wide variety of laboratory and workforce development subjects.
  • Support DCLS with Laboratory Systems Improvement and Training initiative.


The work environment will be both a laboratory and clerical/office setting, and the selected candidate will use knowledge of laboratory science and safety to incorporate these practices in training products, as applicable.

This is a full-time restricted position funded by a federal grant and includes state benefits.

Hours of work for this position are typically 8-hour days/5 days per week Monday through Friday. Some weekend, holiday, and on call work may be required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with learning management systems, data entry, maintaining accurate records, and the development and maintenance of electronic databases required.
  • Significant experience designing, planning, and conducting formal technical trainings for internal and external professionals in field of expertise via in person, synchronous and asynchronous modalities required.
  • Communication, training design and workforce training delivery experience required.
  • Experience using Microsoft Suite programs and email programs for work coordination required.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, quality assurance, and quality control principles and procedures
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of laboratory science, good laboratory practices, laboratory instrumentation
  • Comprehensive knowledge and work-related experience with the theory and application of chemical and/or microbiological principles
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills to provide consultation to customers relating to workforce development programs and initiatives.
  • Use of electronic learning management system to design, develop and deliver effective instructional materials.
  • Knowledge and skills in the development of training needs assessments and utilizing the most appropriate training modality to deliver effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others and work in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and show initiative, working cooperatively with other staff members to seek out mutually agreeable solutions to problems.

Additional Considerations

  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations governing laboratories, laboratory certification
  • Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple simultaneous projects and deadlines
  • Experience providing coaching, career counseling and mentoring
  • Experience performing basic and complex laboratory testing procedures
  • Experience utilizing eLearning software to design and development training.
  • Experience utilizing audio/visual and other media equipment.
