SALARY: $4,676 monthly

LOCATION: Olympia, Washington

REPORTS TO: The Secretary/Deputy Secretary of the Senate

Background

The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually beginning the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. The Senate Workroom serves an integral role in the law-making process while providing support in the Senate Chamber during floor sessions. Staff receive and publish all bills, amendments, and committee reports while providing timely updates on bill progress to the legislative community and public through custom applications. This fast-paced environment provides a unique and personal view into the intricate process through which a bill becomes a law.

This position requires full time, in person work in Olympia. Long and irregular hours may be required during the legislative session, including occasional evening and weekend work.

Position Responsibilities 

·       Copies documents (reports, bills, amendments, etc.) for floor sessions and general distribution; 

·       Organizes and maintains archival bill files; 

·       Prepares reports for floor sessions using custom applications; 

·       Stocks and maintains Workroom copy room; 

·       Receives, verifies, and delivers reports, documents, and bills from committees, House of Representatives, Code Reviser and Governor’s office; 

·       Assists the Secretary of the Senate’s office in phone coverage; 

·       Provides backup support for Workroom staff; and 

·       Assists in proofreading legislative documents. 

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications 

Two years of general secretarial/clerical experience, including at least one session of Senate, House, or legislative agency work experience. One year of college may be substituted for one year of experience. 

Other Critical Skills and Abilities 

·       Operate a photocopier, Windows-based computer, and printer; read and write professionally; file alphabetically and numerically. 

·       Quickly learn new custom software applications; 

·       Understand and follow directions; learn, apply, and interpret policies and procedures; anticipate and prepare for floor action under time constraints; 

·       Maintain effective working relations with co-workers, other Senate staff, and legislators; and 

·       Maintain confidentiality and a civil, non-partisan demeanor; interact respectfully

with Senators and staff of both parties. 

Benefits

Salary and Duration 

The salary for this position is $4,676 per month. This is a temporary position beginning mid to late- December and lasting approximately through mid-end of April. Mandatory employment training will be scheduled several days prior to the 2025 legislative session. The Legislature is currently scheduled to convene on January 13, 2025.
