JOB TITLE: Zoning Inspector GRADE: 11

DEPARTMENT: Planning and Zoning FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Planning and Zoning

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include investigations and enforcement of the Washington County Zoning Ordinance and Weed
Control Ordinance. The Zoning Coordinator provides direct supervision under the guidance of the Director of the
Division of Plan Review and Permitting.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)

1. Perform field inspections in response to complaints and inquiries on the Washington County Zoning
Ordinance and Weed Control Ordinance and effect compliance with same

2. Meet with property owners/occupants of suspected properties in violation.

3. Prepare and issue field correction notices and/or civil citations for posting and mailing regarding violations of the various codes and related correspondence

4. Document daily inspection results

5. Conduct inspections of commercial properties for compliance with approved site plan

6. Verify appeal sign postings necessary for the public hearing held by the Board of Zoning Appeals

7. Work with County Attorneys office in pursuing violations in court and attend and/or testify in Court

8. Assist public, visitors and/or telephone callers, with questions relating to general zoning questions

9. Work with other county and state agencies as necessary to address citizen complaints

10. Perform related work as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

1. High school graduation or the equivalent

2. Minimum 2 years of work experience in code enforcement or legal investigative work. Additional related education may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement.

3. Knowledge of codes and ordinance governing zoning regulations

4. Ability to effectively read and interpret maps and plans

5. Possess basic computer/word processing skills

6. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, agencies, developers, co-workers and the public

7. Possess strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills

8. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and move boxes of printed materials weighing up to 30 pounds

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Possession of a valid automobile operators license

2. Available for evening and/or weekend hours as needed for meetings and other commitments

3. Obtain the ICC Zoning Inspector Certification within one year of employment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some standing, waling, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, and handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to do field inspections.
